Hello, I’m plumbing my aquarium and I’ve run into a problem with my return pump for my sump. It is the Jebao DCP-4000 and it can only fit either 3/4 inch of hard tubing or 1 inch of soft tubing.

I’m hard plumbing using only 1 inch schedule 40 pvc and so I’m not sure what to do now. I’ve heard that soft tubing is better for the return line so how could I connect silicone tubing to my pvc tubing? Or should I get 3/4 inch pvc and connect it to my 1 inch pvc?

Get a 1 inch barb fitting with threads on the other end. The threads will screw into an adapter that glues onto your hard pvc line.

Here's the type of barb you want:

Adapter for the PVC:

Make sure you use reinforced silicone soft tubing so it doesn't collapse. A union isn't a bad idea too, to easily remove for maintenance.

Alright, thanks for the advice! Do I need any sort of plumbers tape for the barb fitting or will regular pvc glue work just fine?

You want to use teflon tape or paste (rector seal) on the threads. Some people say teflon tape is not best on plastic threads although most people use it without any issue. Use a hose clamp around the flexible tubing where it goes over the barb. Use a stainless steel clamp if it’s not submerged in water, otherwise use a plastic clamp. Use pvc primer and glue on the slip joint adapter that goes on the hard pvc pipe.

Yes, that will work. BRS has a barb fitting but you'll still need to adapt to the barb. BRS has a barb fitting that will glue into that elbow if you don't want to use a threaded one. There are a number of different fitting combinations you can use.
