Hey all, I am just doing research into starting up a mixed reef in a aqua one minireef 160 and I was just wondering what would be an adequate lighting upgrade. I plan to start off with livestock first (stocking to be determined) so the included 40w led should be sufficient until I upgrade later on.

I am based in Sydney Australia so if there are any members who have experience with this aquarium or know great lighting available in Australia feel free to reply!

Welcome to R2R!

I'm not familiar with that tank but 40 watts may not be enough light, depending on what you plan to keep. :)

Thank you!

I am looking to mainly keep LPS because I am most familiar with them but I would be interested in maybe one frag of acropora or montipora if there is one I am interested in. The tank is 160L (42.3G) with dimensions of 90x45x45cm!

I would want a light that I could control so I can provide the best for the coral and I don't know if that light is very controllable. As a start though do you think it would be okay?

My idea is to have a lot of movement and colour within the reef so I am planning to keep blastos, zoas, torch, ricordia, acans, scoly, favia and a bta later on after the tank has matured!

It looks like those who get this setup replace the lights. :)

I have made a stock list and was just wondering if this would be ideal for the size aquarium. I am very happy to hear your guy's feedback!

Fish
  • Pair of snowflake clowns
  • 1x Flame Angel (aware system might be too small and it could nip at coral)
  • 2x Purple Firefish (happy to not add if Flame Angel takes up too much bioload)
Inverts
  • 1x Blood Fire Shrimp
  • 1x Tuxedo Urchin
  • 1x Sand-Sifting Star
  • 5x Nassarius Snails
  • 5x Turbo Snails
  • 3x Hermit Crabs
  • 1x Rose Bubble Tip Anemone

I ran a Hydra 52 on that tank, these days it would be a Hydra 64 HD if you want SPS eventually. And a Nero 5 wavemaker.

Forget the star. It'll starve to death in that size tank.
And think twice about the anemone
