I'm browsing around R2R and seeing some really gorgeous reef setups, jam-packed with various coral species and types. But when reading the individual description of a lot of corals, it says it needs space to prevent stinging, or releasing toxins that are harmful to other coral species. My question is how is it possible to achieve a harmonious reef that's filled with variety, like the ones I'm seeing?

It can depend on what's in your tank, but lots of people keep mixed reefs with minimal or no issues. Are you currently having a particular problem with a coral or just thinking about the future?

It takes some reading about each coral, each coral is aggressive in a different way. Some corals have stinger tentacles 10" long so need more space, some corals have just tiny stingers so can be side by side. Some corals release toxins against other corals, so good flow and carbon will remove this. Some corals grow on top of other corals, some corals grow big and shade out other corals.

Its really about doing your due diligence for each purchase, or else you learn the hard way.

I'm very new to the reef hobby and still in the earliest building stage for my tank. Thinking about the future, because of course I want that gorgeous, full reef
