Hey guys, I recently set up a new 300 gallon system. Everything is going well. I have several fish in and some easy corals. I transferred some live rock from my old 75 gallon. Anyway, all that to say that these fine dust particles in my water are killing me. I'm not sure if it's still my sand getting stirred up by my flow and it'll all eventually get separated out or if there is something else I need to do. most of the particles are really fine. IT's not air bubles. I can see a distinct difference from when I introduce air into the return. I've been using some DIY coral snow and that helps some but seems to be a temporary fix. I'm going to build one of Paul B's DIY diatom filters and run it with a pretty hefty pump tomorrow and see what I can get out of the water column. For filtration right now I"m running a reefmat 1200, but it's either not getting this stuff because it's too small or it's not making its way down the overflow.

The tank is 96x24x30. I have 4 Nero 7's in random mode with 50% max speed on the sides. I have 2 Nero 5's on 75% random speed on the back. My flow could be too much I suppose but I am not sure if that's the issue or not.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

How recently did you set up?

Is the substrate new?

It's been up about 3 weeks. Substrate was live sand carib-sea special grade. I considered that was the issue for a while but I feel like all the dust from that should be settled and or filtered out by now.

Do you have a skimmmer? They actually help with small particulate as well.

If you can, turn off some of your flow and see if that helps. When you turn it back on, you can also see if it kicks up more substrate.

Basically try to turn things off and move them around to see if they help the situation.

I do have a skimmer. I turned all flow off and it just looked like really fine dust suspended. It wasn't really rising or anything. I was starting to think maybe microbubbles but I don't think it is. I'm gonna try and stir up the sand good to get as much suspended and filtered out as I can since I didnt rinse my sand and keep adjusting my flow
