Hey guys,

Ordering a new 23x23x23 acrylic cube tank and I am wondering where most of you prefer the overflow to be? I was thinking a corner overflow but not sure if there is a upside/downside to either of them.

I would try to do an external overflow. Possibly about 18-21 inches across the back of your tank. It will allow u plenty of room to work

I think there are positives and negatives to all options.

1. External overflow
Positive = less room taken from internal tank space = more room for scape or free swimming space
Negative = more external space taken = home placement challenges & cant be placed flush against wall without leaving a gap/space

2. Internal corner overflow
Positive = less obstructive placement than having it in center which permits more scapeing freedom and can be placed flush against wall
Negative = takes up more usable tank space and unless you place tank in a corner you now have a visible overflow from outside of tank unless covered / painted

3. Internal center overflow
Positive = Freedom to place tank flush against wall and still be able to be visually appealing from other 3 sides without covering or painting to cover exterior eye sore
Negative = takes up space in the center which can cause scaping challenges

I currently have a cube with an exterior overflow and I am currently in the planning stages of a new larger cube which will be internal overflow as I do not like having an external overflow due to placement limitations.

Good luck with whatever you decide

+++ agreed. Spot on for the point of sale / negs. I like the center internal overflow.

Wow, I did not see the responses to this thread until now. I went with the corner overflow. I am space challenged here in San Francisco.......so I will deal with the aquascaping challenges. I am getting my tank from John at advanced acrylics and it should be shipping here any day now. The dimensions I settled on were 24x22x22. Will be creating a tank thread once it gets here. All f my supplies are arriving slowly.

Thanks for the replies,

Aaron

I think you made a good choice and I'm sure you will enjoy it. I did however have a question. I noticed the you initially said you were going 23x23x23 but now you said 24x22x22. While I understand going 24 long, what made you go less deep and less high? Price should not have been more as the cost should have been the same as if you would have gone 24x24x24

External is your best solution. It opens the tank up to more options for aquascaping and gives more space.
