Brittle stars and serpent stars have been known to try and catch and eat fish. Though some do it more regularly than others. I wonder on how the fish is doing? Does it seem to be healthy? The star may have been sensing an easy meal. Or like @EricR asked about may be a more predatory star.

I feel you are right. Maybe he sensed a easy kill. The fish was tripping out stuck by heater and when I helped it, it went to the sand and rested its nose on sand then the starfish hunted. I have clownfish have the size and they always swim near it and have never been attacked

I was watching videos the other day of brittle stars in the ocean catching healthy fish like crazy. It would seem that in a wild environment, this is very normal behavior for them. As a species both brittle stars and serpent stars are predatory in addition to being scavengers.

Hopefully he doesnt get burned. How does his swimming look? He is probably looking for a safe place to hide. Anyone else messing with him in the tank?
His swimming is fine, occasionally he comes out unstuck and swims around and hangs out. They told me at LFS he was eating frozen brine yet to see him gobble up food.

The heater is off with my tank at 76 currently because California is very warm!
