I have a melanurus wrasse that I'm ready to bring out of QT. It sleeps in a clay pot full of sand and the tank it is going into is barebottom so I'm bringing the pot of sand up with the fish. I'm thinking of bringing the fish up early in the morning a few hours before his wake up time. What do you think the chances are of bringing the pot up while the fish is in it sleeping if I am able to do it without draining the water out of the sand? Think the fish will stay in the sand during the move?

I have done this numerous times when moving sand sleepers to a new tank. It’s a perfect way to not tick them off!

I'll prepare for both scenarios and hope for a sleepy wrasse. If it does stay in the sand I'll try and wake it up around sunrise while all the other fish are still down for the night. The wrasse normally doesn't get up untill 11am.

Update. Time to transfer. It went smoothly. I had placed a piece of plastic in the bottom of the pot before I added the sand so I was able to lift the pot out without water draining out of it while the wrasse was sleeping. Brought it upstairs and placed it into the new tank without the wrasse even stirring.
