Why does phyto bloom so easily in my tank?
My gorgonian loves phyto. My pods love phyto and phyto loves my tank. I could probably bottle and sell live phyto for a living if my DT is any indication of how well I can raise the stuff.
24 gallon AIO. I dosed 5 ml twice in 7 days in a crystal clear tank and had to do a 30 % water change today cuz green water, and will be doing another one tomorrow because my water is still cloudy but not green. Confirmed phyto microscopically. No dinos or cyano or anything in the water except phyto and pods. My skimmer is skimming nothing but green.

It did this once before and I waited it out and did routine WC and it likely probably all got eaten and/skimmed out but this time it was just awful.
I’m aerating the tank well with the skimmer plus return nozzle water breaking the surface as well as a power head agitating the surface.
My phosphates are a little high (.05-.08) nitrates at 5.

Is 5 mls just too much? I may have to try UV this time. I did WC 12 hours ago and it’s noticeably clouding up again. Any suggestions?

try short photo periods on UV sterilizer and it will clear the water up quickly, dose less / or less frequently with phyto and you should be fine

I stopped dosing phyto for this reason. Still got pods and RedSea AB+ seems to keep softies happy
I feed reef energy AB+ as well but my gorgonian prefers the phyto. I know ppl that dose it frequently and never have blooms. I wish I could figure out what makes it take off in my tank. Maybe just not enough stuff eating it.
