Hello all,

I am planning on getting the Nikon D300 body only. I just have one question about it. There are two versions, one is the poly-carbonate Japanese version $850. the other is the one with the metal body, i think it is magnesium, which is like $1500. Is there really any difference between the two other than what the body is made out of? Does the poly-carbonate affect the performance of the camera?

Thanks,

Matt

the plastic one doesnt even sound legit.

Plus, you dont want a japanese warranty.

buy the american version with the mag body (i have one), you will never have a single regret.

Yep, probably what I am going to do. Wont need to upgrade the camera for awhile thats for sure! is there any benefit of the Compact Flash drive over the SD Cards? Also any recommend glass?

go with the extreme sd cards, teh extreme 3 to be exact awsome card and SUPER fast load times. it also will allow you to take pictures faster and download them MUCH quicker, the 8gb card runs about 100 dollars

Definitely work towards getting the 105mm VR Micro lens. I've had the 105mm sigma and the 90mm tamron and i'll never go back to 3rd party lenses again. I love the D300 and the 105mm combo.

I agree with junior, for a camera like that you don't want to go with a non-us (grey market) version. I also have a d300 you are going to like it a lot.

The d300 used compact flash memory not sd memory.

either way San Disk makes a compact flash memory card and they do have the extreme III series for compact flash as well, make sure you buy this series as its the best out there

Actually, the extreme IV series tested faster, and the ducati line tested a hair faster than the extreme IV. As for benefits of CF over SD(HC), CF tops out at a faster xfer bandwidth than SD if I recall correctly.

Sandisk had an awesome rebate promotion going last month through their preferred sellers. If you go to Calumet or Adorama and look up some drives, you'll find the current promotion pdf in the individual product pages. There are a lot of preferred sellers, so you have a lot of choices from which to choose your gear.

Oh yeah, don't go ebay for flash memory. Most of those are fakes from China.

Ive have bought half a dozen lenses and 3 Nikon bodies from them.

I second B&H. Never bought a camera from them but I have bought a lens and my tripod system and other goodies from them and they are top notch. I had to return a camera bag to them once and they made it very easy. For used gear try KEH.com. They are legit and there rating system is pretty conservative so chances are the items you get from them will actually be in better condition than they rate it. I bought my Tamron 90mm from them and I would not have been able to tell it from new.

Right now I think beachcamera.com is the cheapest reputable place.

beachcamera and b and h are the two I am tossing around. I like beach because they throw in a compact flash with it. If I bought from B and H i would have to spend an extra $50 for the flash.

Congrats. You definitely can't go wrong with B&H. Make sure to get some pictures posted up when that bad boy arrives.

Will do! Now on to my next purchases, Tamron 90mm macro or Sigma 105mm macro, not sure which one I want yet. Any suggestions?

A new tripod-

New camera bag- probably going to go with the lowepro backpacks

and a remote for the camera!

I am overly excited!

you will love the tamron, or even better the nikkor 105. If you dont want to spend that kind of money on a lens right now, go with the tamron. It blows the doors off the sigma 105. If you decide to go the tamron route, PM me first.

Ive used ALL of them, and hated the sigma. the 150 is pretty cool, but you dont want to ONLY have a 150, you are too far from the tank is the coral is close to the glass.
