Hello all, As the title says I just got back into saltwater after about 10 years. This algae whatever it is is winning the battle because I am out out idea's my water parameters are near perfect though about a week ago I added some calcium supplement (for my halimeda plant)
and misread the directions and killed 5 of my most expenise fish rip Coral Beauty, Rusty Tang, Bi color Tang, Royal Gramma, and my poor purple dotty.

It’s surface algae and green cyano
Causes are:
Too much light
Light intensity too bright
Using tap water
Lack of water movement
Lack of cleaning crew/snails

From the pics, this is a basic/non-reef ready tank and likely filtered by a canister unit which will have increased nitrate, phosphate or both
Add a power head or two for movement, reduce white light intensity, clean canister more frequently and place a pouch of chemipure blue or elite in the canister

-Whst light and filter are you using?
-Age of tank ?
-What type of water-RODI or tap water from the faucet?
What test kits are you using?

I use api saltwater liquid test kits plus I have the test strips for quick readings. my nitrates are 0 as are my nitrites.
The canister I use is actually made for a 150 gallon tank but I'm using it on a 55 gallon tank plus I have a marineland bio 50 on the back. Media in the canister from bottom to top is Fluval pre-Filter Media, next is Continuum Aquatics Bact Rox similar to Matrix bio media then activated carbon, and final stage is a product I stumbled on and really like Fluval Clearmax. Tank is about 3 months up and running and yes using tap but we use well water
