I am not an expert here by any means, so please take that into account.

The first photo from the OP is a true plating Monti. Notice how it forms levels of smooth plates?

The photo you shared looks to me to be similar to a branching form. They grow out to look similar to those beautiful acro colonies. Spires attached to a main base.

This could also be completely off base. I say this because yours looks similar to mine in color and basic shape. Yours almost looks to be reaching for light. ?

It’s curious because i grows very fast and spreads out, but over time the “spires” form. Both LfS that a trade to really like it as they haven’t seen one grow quite like it.
Ive had it for years.

Like I said. I am not an expert here. I have only in the last year been able to keep Monti's alive at all. Notice the growth rings on the edges of the ones I posted? This has been the growth since I did my tank upgrade about 7 weeks ago. The red one has literally grown about 1/4 inch in that time.

So this is what then…
A plating but not a Cap?
I am by means an expert either but I would guess it’s not a Cap. Also, the growth form of a coral can sometimes be a little weird. For instance I have a mystic sunset monti that is a encrusting monti that in my tank started encrusting and now it’s plating.

Yeah it grows fast but has great colors and polyp extension for a monti IMHO
I do like the colors of it, and when my tank was newer I liked fast growing corals like that. Now that my tank is over crowded and many of my corals are fighting for space I don’t care for it all that much. I see the space that it takes up and all I see is a big space where I could put a nice garden of torches.
