Does anyone know the specific type of montipora this is as in plating, scrolling, etc. I wanted to start a colony in my tank exactly like this one.

Ditto, mines orange rather than red. The plating one on the bottom started as a single little piece smaller than the ones on the back wall. They are actually pieces I broke off when I was clumsy. They grow fast given good light.20220821_160800.jpg

It is a plating montipora, but not a montipora capricornis. true capricornis are dull purple in color, and plate in a cup-like shape. True capricornis also don't have any tuberculae, papillae, or ridges, and have a wavelike texture on them.

Can I get an ID on this monti, thought it was a cap, but based on your comments not sure. Note the ”spires” that grow from the body..

my favorite is a grafted monitpora
I’ve tried taking both green and red and attaching both on a plug .
funniest thing is they both grew together on each side of the plug . Never attached together

So this is our red montipora capricornis acroporidae. Sorry for the bad pic but I think you can get the idea.IMG_0346.jpeg

I have 3 plate Monti's in my tank... redish purple, a nice green and an Ultra Monti which has blue polyps on a reddish plate...

Edit: Wow!! What happened to the color on the red one? On my phone screen it looks EXACTLY like what it does in the tank. On the laptop, the color is all washed out and drab!! GGRRRR!!!

no, its not a capricornis. Its some other type of plating montipora
I thought plating would not expand out and up? Thought they grew down over rock?
When I frag it it always expands outwards and up.
The monti behind the green one is what i’ve seen as typical encrusting.

I believe you have it backwards. Plates expand out and then up, forming levels of "plates" hence the name. Encrusters cover the rock surface, forming a crust over the rock surface. Again, hence the name.
