Good afternoon all!

I'm purchasing a new to me 225-gallon tank soon to replace my current freshwater display. I'm going balls to the walls of sorts. I want some input on this setup's current pump and if anyone has used anything like this for a tank this size. It's a Sequence 3600SEQ12. All I can find on their site is that it is not recommended for use with saltwater and also not a submersible pump. I've done a lot of research on sumps the last few weeks as I've been looking into doing this swap and 99% of what I've seen is that submersible pumps are the standard, in similar size and fashion as this one.

My current experience in reefing is just a 29-gallon biocube and 13.5-gallon Fluval tank I've made a handful of upgrades to.

TIA!

If it says not for saltwater, I’d recommend listening to that.

Who knows if the materials are compatible.

Depending how it cools the rear bearing and such could be a problem.

OCTO Varios pumps are great and priced decently.

THE most important information we need is -- Basement sump or under the tank?
Under the tank in the cabinet for the sump location. Centered tower overflow in the tank.

Yeah, that's what had me a little worried. According to the below link, it has stainless steel hardware already, it's just not "approved" for saltwater use.

Sycce are usually highly regarded but reflected in price. I'd find one with controllable flow. How ever much you need should be in the midrange of the pump.

very solid pumps, the “ControlAll” app and wi-fi connection is baby diapers tho
if your tank is mostly clowns and royalgrammas, maybe a DC Jebao would suffice,
if stocking a school of Gem tangs, pick the Reef Octo

Won't be stocked with anything crazy at least to start, my Fluval 13.5 just has some small hammers, a few SPS, and a bunch of zoas currently. Likely will either frag some of those out and move them around or just start with some SPS. I don't have any big ideas yet, just namely making sure it will all work together and getting it to a stable point before buying anything pricey fish or coral-wise.

For the Reef Octo pump, the Varios 4-6 I would think?

I buy generic brand dc variable return pumps on Amazon and love them. Mine is 1200 gph max, dc, adjustable and was 70$. Im on 6-7 years with it and no issues. Running around 50% and it’s silent.

I'll look into these, any specific ones to look out for?

If noise is important to you, DC pumps are quieter than AC pumps.

I'm not sure how loud it will be but my current 240 freshwater setup has 2 fx6's, an fx5 and 2 giant wavemakers on it so I'm used to a little noise lol

Don't bother with other cheap knockoffs, get a Jebao DCP instead.

EP6500 seem okay? Just run it on a slightly lower setting? Bare minimum as a backup pump. I think I'll try with that other pump since it was running with that for however long and have a backup.

I also would like to have a larger sump, it's got a 40 gallon breeder sized sump roughly now, which seems small for a 225. There's plenty of room inside the cabinet to run a 75 gallon for a sump.

Sorry, I'm not up to date with current Jebao model offerings. You can do a "Jebao return pump" search here on R2R and find plenty of threads with exact model recommendations. Here's just one thread:

Yeah that's fair. I use Jebao wavemakers on all my freshwater tanks currently. Also I just nixed the 75 gallon idea, it's 2" too tall to fit into my stand, a 60 gallon aqueon however, will fit. I'll make a new post on all that though.

I'll update in a week or two on whatever direction I wound up going. Thank you guys for all your help!!

I’d say the Varios 6 for the larger tank..

I’m running a Varios 4 on a 32 gallon, but turned way down. The returns are also a big part of the flow in my tank so I do run more water through my sump then most people. Roughly 10x turnover but that’s due to size of the tank.

I also used this Varios 4 on my 100 gallon and it was enough on setting 4..

My Varios has been a champ for years and I haven’t had an issue yet.

The built in safety float is a really nice feature.

I can’t even hear it turn on, I hear the water flow up the return pipes as it whistles the air out of the return nozzles. Lol

I tend to agree with the Varios recommendation.
My only problem with submersible pumps is the heat they put int the water.
If I had the room, I would plumb EXTERNALLY.
They can run either way.
