New to having a goni, is this normal?

I have one goni in the tank. He has closed up for the last couple of days. He had done this one before for almost a week and reopened. Is this normal Goni behavior, to close up from time to time for a few days? Parameters all look good and all other coral fully extended and healthy.

FWIW he has been in the exact same spot since I put him in the tank. Only recently did this. But I will make the change and look for improvement. I have increased the flow in the tank slightly.

No. It’s a wildfire sympodium.

Goni will do whatever the heck they want for seemingly no reason. It’s hard to determine if there is a problem or if it’s just moody. Changes - in location especially, or flow or lighting, can take days or weeks to adapt. I’ve learned, with mine at least, that when I think something is wrong to just leave it because moving it just further annoys it. I’ve had 10 Goni open and 1 stayed unextended for multiple weeks and was only partially open. I’ve had Goni with 3”
Tentacles for months and then they closed up for a week, and then only extended 1-1.5”.

Every Goni can also be unique in what it wants. Some like low flow some like medium. Some like low lighting, some like medium or high. If the current spot/conditions were going well and it was extending and looking good, and then stopped, I would say just leave it and wait it out. If it never really opened good, then I would suggest to move to a lower spot

Sympodium doesn’t get enough attention. I had a nice colony of it years ago, and in that sps/lps mixed reef, it was one of my favorites. Yours looks great!

I agree both of mine like low flow and low light but all gonis can be different like you said

My main 75g reef has probably 20 Goni in it. There’s almost always one or two not open one day and open a few days later

I decided to convert a 15g peninsula to a Goni tank and I’ve had mixed results and found placement challenging.

This Goni LOVES high flow

The others like medium to low or they don’t open

It’s a work in progress tank. Going through a rebuild. Ignore the glass. Part of my experiment with this tank was to see if some “trouble” Gonis of mine preferred a higher nutrient environment. Nitrates around 20 and phosphate .1-.2

Ohhh yea they can be for sure

Watch for true signs of issues

1) receding around skeleton
2) algae growth on skeleton
3) prolonged complete retraction

Example of diva - the red bottom left one is partial open. Was fine for few weeks then did this for several days

Open ^^^ but not extending good. Key is - it’s open partial. I just waited it out and a week later…back to normal as if nothing ever happened

The adjacent one is also being moody, open some days closed other. While his neighbors are all open and fine

There are many Goni species also! The polyps are different; the amount of typical extension is different.

We have come a long way with Goni and it’s way better than it was a few years ago, but there is still much to learn
