Hi everyone, we are considering adding a bat fish to our 90 gallon fish only tank. This bat fish is extremely cool looking when it’s juvenile. Does anyone have experience with them? Obviously they’re not cheap, but I’m worried about keeping them alive. We currently have all juvenile of the following

Flame angle
Clown Trigger
Humu Trigger
Blue Face Angel
Emperor angel
2 clown fish
Jawfish

We’re on the process of building a much larger tank that we will split these fish into. TIA

Batfish get huge. I had one of its cousins, the Orbic Batfish (many years ago) that grew up inside of a year to be at least 12" in diameter like two Frizbees put together and swimming around. IT was a cool fish, very friendly and always begging for more food. I took it back to the wholesaler's and gave it to them to find a home for it.

Get the new tank first, but know they need a lot of space and food.

EDIT:
@areefer01 reminded me, the fish had a great personality but it was not going to win any beauty contests as an adult. It might have been good eating but it was not pretty.

Correct, I agree. I don’t like the way it looks as an adult. I think we’ll just avoid it for now. Thanks for commenting.

That tank is overstocked already I’d say.

These bat fish shouldn’t even be in the hobby as they get huge and do best in groups over singularly. Each one gets a foot long at a bare minimum but also they’re what I call ‘box’ fish as they get as tall as they do long so you need a deep tank for them too.
