Hi All,

I just got this new green anemone for my 25 Waterbox (over a year old).

He was great and super happy. Fed him every night when I feed my fish and he would occasionally retract but was extended 90% percent of the time.

He moved from the top to his current position at the bottom of the tank.

He’s been fine all day but about an hour ago I came down to find him like this.

All Params tested and good, nitrate and phosphate low, salinity 1.025.

Is this normal or is he dying? It certainly doesn’t look good.

What should I do?

You only need to feed the anemone once or twice a week, daily feeding is not recommended just feed it heavy on a single day of the week and leave it alone for the rest of the week. What is the alkalinity levels of your tank?

Need actual parameters and stop feeding it. They do not need to be fed at all, and once a day can actually cause problems.

I don’t have an alk test but I got it tested when I bought the anemone last week and alk was perfect.
You need to keep alk, calcium and magnesium kit on you preferably the salifert ones or the Hanna checkers. Alk drops really fast once you introduce corals and anemone.

Appreciate your response.

I don’t have the actual numbers for nitrates/ phosphates/ nitrites as I just use test strips but I just tested and they’re all at the bottom of the range. I do weekly 6G water changes so bad water has never been an issue. My tank is all softies, a pistol and goby and two perc clownfish.

So you’re saying stop feeding more than once a week? Ty for that.

Have you seen an anemone look like this before? Is this

My bubble tip deflates like that every night. It’ll recover once it’s not being fed and the alkalinity is in acceptable range.

Thanks for some good news. Fingers crossed. My pain concern is this thing coming out of its mouth, I’ve never seen it before (pic attached)

You can't say everything is fine while not testing properly. You need to get a set of real tests or have your LFS test your water at bare minimum. I'm not aware of test strips that have ever been recommended or should even be used.

It's fine. It'll be back to normal in a day or so. As far as having trouble from feeding too often the only problem i ever had from that was too many anemones. Lol

That’s just poop, does it look strings of brown? My bubble tip will release huge amounts of it from time to time. Yours is just over fed.

I never had that specific nem but i've had half a dozen other kinds. Sometimes they do that.... kinda purge the things they can't digest. Then they go back to normal. Tomorrow it might look a little sad but by the next day it should be back to normal or real close.

Ty for all your responses. I’ll send an update tomorrow.

I’ve been feeding LRS Reef Frenzy Nano to just about everything with great results. Is there anything else you would recommend for an anemone?

Mine enjoyed freeze dried mysis fed to it with tweezers, but really it’ll get plenty just from you feeding the tank. Hand feeding it is really more for us than them

I have 6 ranging from 4" to 14". I never directly feed them. Just what ever they can catch. I started with 2.

Just a brief update. She’s getting back to her old self. I think y’all were right about feeding.

It won’t happen again - new anemone parent here....

Appreciate all the help! :)

Btw, the clowns still won’t take to her. I tried the print outs on the glass but that did nothing. If anyone knows how to get percs to take to anemones let me know. Thanks again
