I've got so much stuff on my aquarium set up already that I really have no use for this. Even using a couple features can make this a worthwhile investment. The most common ones you may use are wavemaker, light timer, ato, and temp controller. Here's a list of its functions:

•
Lighting Control
•
Wave Maker
•
Simulated Moon Cycle
•
Seasonal Lighting Variation
•
Seasonal Temperature Variation
•
4 External Switch Inputs
•
Temperature Monitor and Control
•
pH Monitor and Control
•
ORP Monitor and Control or second pH probe Monitoring/Control
•
Flash Memory for Easy Firmware Upgrades
•
Data Logging
•
RS232 Computer Interface
•
Ethernet Interface
•
Telnet Server
•
HTTP Server
•
Email Alarm Notification
•
Local Alarms
•
Simple Yet Sophisticated Programming Language
•
2 Lines by 16 Character backlit LCD Display
• Built in Self Test

And the manual:

This comes with Ethernet cable, temp probe, and AC power adapter. I also have the "power strip" that comes with it. It has eight 120v outlets, and interfaces with the AC3 (have cord) to control these outlets.

Here's one. I just tested the temp probe to make sure it is still good. Temp probes seem to fail often, from my experience, so I wanted to make sure. I never used this myself. I bought it from another local guy, saw it working on his setup before buying. I have plugged it in and everything appears to be working fine. Of course, I'll give a reasonable amount of time to return it if it's DOA or anything like that, but I don't think it will be a problem.

I'm not aware of it being able to, and would be very surprised if it was able to work with a smartphone at all. This is an older model, but I figure that if you use it only as a temp controller/alarm and to time lights, it's worth the asking price. Personally, if I wanted a lot of features, I'd spend more and get a newer and nicer one....although it would be nice to sell this one. :)
