Hi guys,

Im in the process of building my first mixed reef tank, please take a look at what I have so far and give me your advice/critiques ( don't worry about being harsh I can take it! ). My tank is a Waterbox Marine 110, the display tank is 80 gallons. Ive made sure that there is atleast 2 inches on each side of the aquascape. I do plan to add more islands where I can put some soft corals that can be isolated so that they dont take over the tank. I did try to build a few caves/areas where the fish can shelter but I'm not sure if I need some more? You can't see from the pictures but the back side has some covered sheltered areas as well.

I tried to stay around 50% of the heigh of the tank, but there are definitely a couple of areas that ar around 2/3rds of the tank - I know thats pretty high. As for live stock I plan, I haven't fully decided yet but was thinking the obligatory clowns, a gobie/pistol shrimp, maybe a wrasse or two, some chromis, and maybe a tang ( not sure on this as I don't know if my tank is big enough but I will look into it ). I'm sure there are some other fish I'll want to add, but I'm brand new to this hobby and am currently soaking up as much knowledge as I can.

Thanks for looking!

as for style points i can’t complain and if this truly is your first then you’ve done an amazing job looks truly great
and for livestock i think having a little bit of everything is great since sometimes you might get a fish you never planned on
if you put sps or other corals that will grow large over the years that will definitely fill in and make more habitat too
overall in my opinion this scape is 10/10
good flow, great design, small caves and overhangs and would be easy to add to in the future if needed

good job!!

Thanks so much! I drew inspiration from the countless aquascapes I checked out on here, and also all of the youtube videos out there. Do you have any advice/input on coral that are somewhat hardy and won't break the bank which would be good candidates for putting on some small islands around the tank??

one of my favorites i’ve kept at the bottom was a duncan coral
it was a single head on a small rock and grew to a sizable colony within a year
pretty easy going in my opinion
as for zoas if you’re into them i would have a dedicated island until you figure out what grows good with your tank so you don’t accidentally infest the scape

the right side rock with the lower portion i think would look good having a few hammers or octos on it
and one sps i would stay away from is pocillopora, they look cool to me but when they get bigger the shaded polyps will bail out and have a pretty high success rate of grabbing hold and re growing so that’s another infestation

i know this is a lot of rambling but i think this scape would do really well with sps (im sure someone else will chime in that has more experience with them)

good luck!

I think it looks very nice, but i dont know that 2 inches is enough clearence around the glass. While its still empty stick your arm in there imaigne you are doing some cleaning or maintance or trying to catch a fish. What about after youve had some coral grow out. If youre going to do good maintaince make it easy for yourself.

Good luck
