Well it’s only been 2 years of current reefing, I had a few tanks back in high school but ended up giving up because money. Ive also been reading RC, before they pretty much went dead, and R2R after this place started popping up on google after RC went away while tankless. So I felt I’m pretty well established in the basics of reefing in theory. Well in my current reef things have never been better, this has been my most successful reef tank yet. Then one day my rainbow monti and green slimer started dying. A forest fire was right behind them showing signs of not being happy. I’ll admit with a fairly basic tank set up I’m a, if it looks good let it be, guy. So I went through my tests, a few basic elements were low but nothing to worry about, phosphate was undetectable with my salifert kits. Everything else was fine. Did a few water changes starting feeding very heavy and my corals are coming back.

Well I was reading through random posts here and one was asking about salinity. Something I already know, its burned into my brain. Well somewhere along the line my brain decided my water needed to be at 30ppt, the thread I was reading everyone was saying 35. Did some research and yep, 35. I have no idea when I decided 30 was the number, but I checked my tank and it was siting rock solid at 30. No idea how fast I did it or when, would also explain my low test results. So I’ve been spending the last week getting my salt levels back to 35, currently at 32. So I guess my lesson is keep reading stuff I think I already know. At work the guy I’m with is one of the best in the business and I still catch his little mistakes. Guess it’s one of those things that you just stop thinking about because it’s so simple but you just end up doing it wrong.
