Can someone explain this to me? I really hope I'm not the dumb here.
"Nitrite has no basis in cycling whatsoever in reef displays, you can cease nitrite testing on future tanks as well, don't own the kit it will cause you hesitation and to miss the other factors that protect fish."

Thanks @Soren for the help too.

I would take that to mean that nitrite, as an intermediary between ammonia and nitrate, is a worthless thing to test for.

As to the last sentence...I have no idea...

I'm learning today. What was then linked by another user seems to indicate "less harmful than previously thought." But I have reading and learning when I get to a computer.

I agree that the quoted statement is wrong except in the concept that a successful initial cycling of a saltwater tank can be completed without measuring nitrite. Since nitrite is not toxic in saltwater, measuring it is not essential like it is with ammonia levels when adding ammonia directly. Even though I disagree with extremely limited cycling views and dismissiveness, even ammonia concerns are typically only significant in small, new, bare systems such as quarantines/hospital tanks or in systems where ammonia is being added directly (and could easily be dosed to hazardous levels).

If nitrite is measured, the application is for more granular understanding of biological processes other than the specific cycling process for tank start-up. @Lasse goes into this topic in his article on 15 Steps to Starting a Saltwater Aquarium.

Oops, wrong thread? ;)

Nevermind, I'm the idiot mixing up threads...
That's what I get for opening a bunch of reference links!
I think on that one I just hit reply. I have a similar issue though too. too many threads working at a time.
