Okay, here is the culprit and his new hobby. Digging. I got him from a friend about a year ago, but he just started exposing the bottom of the tank within the past week or two. Is this normal? Is this a problem? I can't find much about it when I search, but I might not be searching well.

I think he is a damsel. I got him from a friend of a friend who was done with fish keeping and switched to coral.

View attachment 3159821This a old photo but if you look at the sand it should be level with the black trim. They are a nightmare when they start doing this .
I have a soft side for damsels but they can test you at times
So, just even the sand bed out regularly?

Yes if it’s not making your water cloudy . I changed to bare bottom tank solved the problem or remove the fish or just slowly move the sand back into place

I'm fighting nitrates at the moment, and I think shaking up the sand bed releases them? I'll just casually cover it up
