Move my tank to sell it? Advice needed

Advice needed!


I currently have a pretty well stocked Red Sea reefer 850 (225g) setup and will be moving soon. I’m trying to figure out how much it would cost to have the system moved to a new house nearby, or if it would be a better idea to sell everything as it is and start a new tank once I’m settled into my new home. So the main questions I have are:

1. how much would a company charge to move the tank?
2. How much should I list the entire setup for of if I decide to sell it all instead of moving it?
3. How much would all the live stock be worth if I decide to just sell all the rock with coral attached and that way I can move the tank to my new home and set it up later down the road with no need to worry about live stock?

Note- If I sold the tank or livestock it would not include the fish or corals on the bottom (trachy, scoly, elegance, zoa rock, etc) those would be traded in for store credit at my local store. It would just include the large main rock structures and everything attached to them.

I think you need to contact some fish stores in your area for quotes on moving the system.

Contact a few LFS in your area to see if they offer the service. Unless you already drained the tank I wouldn't use general movers as they'll likely not know how to safely take down the tank to prevent livestock loss. If you decide to sell then plan on having to part out since few people have the cash on hand to buy the whole setup.

Personally I would keep it and try finding help to move it if it's not too far. It looks to be a very mature tank so probably took a lot of sweat and tears to get it to where it's now.

Financially you would probably be better off moving it. You'll take a hit on the equipment and used large redsea tanks are not popular due to the failures that have been reported. Only reason I would sell all and start over is if you want to move to a larger or smaller tank etc? Tank looks awesome

Your gonna eat it hard if you sell it. Market is beyond saturated with overpriced used stuff.

Selling has no guarantee it will actually sell and I would expect 50% or less on the tank and equipment. People typically aren’t spending 6k on used setups even if it’s a great deal

A moving company can’t handle moving the tank unless it was drained and emptied, sand emptied too.

A LFS would charge a few thousand to break it down, move it, and set it up

I wouldn't sell. You'll get hosed. Big tanks are hard to move, but they're even harder to sell. All my stuff I got used, and I haven't paid over 20% of MSRP for any of it. The market for used setups isn't great, especially as a whole setup. And the bigger the tank the harder it is to sell.

I have moved my tank from Virginia to Jacksonville. And again to a new home in Jacksonville.

My suggestion would be sell all the livestock locally or give to your local reefer friend who can hold.

Empty the tank. Clean up and move it using the usual movers. Once it's empty and clean they move it.

Setup the tank in the new place and do it again. Anyway if you spending to move furniture put this to that and move all together. I did it when I did from VA to FL and within FL.

Don't sell.
