I got this goby a while back, and noticed it had lover jaw half gone, but at that time it didn't effect fish ability to eat or sand shifting, until now. Won't eat now ,pretty much fish is gone. But I like to for future what this is and how to prevent it. Apreranty this is not first case that gobys mouth rot based on Google search, but I haven't found a preventive fix for it.
It's like something is slowly eating away the fish

As you noted, the fish is definitely too far gone by the looks of it, but if it were earlier my first choice of treatment would be an antibiotic. Something like kanaplex or neoplex would hopefully do the trick.

I guess I'm looking for a cause of this! Is it like a known thing with gobys? Something like ich on tangs or urenema on chromies...

If I had to guess, I would say it’s an issue of injury getting infected.
When they are digging in the sand all the time, it’s not too hard tog tag something sharp and mix it with some bacteria. I wonder if @Jay Hemdal has any knowledge on this.

My gosh- this is very severe and Honestly, I would be shocked to see a complete healing. The cause can be fighting, injury followed with infection or attack if bonded with a shrimp or unknown predator in sandbed. Typical medication in quarantine is Seachem neoplex but will at this point be a gamble. As for food, if eating- brine shrimp can be inhaled

It's not a injury, maybe it started as injury, . but mouth is slowly rotting away. It's probably 6month spam of time since I noticed it.

It isn’t something that is very common in any fish, nothing specific to gobies that I’ve ever seen.

The most common cause of jaw injury is getting it caught in a net. However, that is an acute issue, happens right away. This case is different because of the length of time - 4 months is longer than bacterial infections would even take.

What about a cancer?
