I have a herbie style overflow setup with my sump in the basement. My gate valve is in the basement near the sump. After installing a tee to a separate refugium, it seems a bit less stable and I am having to adjust the gate valve to avoid noise and water level fluctuations every couple days. Its not the end of the world, but kind of a pain in the rear to stop whatever I’m doing and run all the way downstairs to adjust it, and I have a vacation coming up.

So I want to install a motor on the gate valve and connect it to my apex for remote control of the valve. I think the main problem will be finding a motor with enough torque to turn the valve and I also must be able to switch the direction of the motor to open or close the valve. Anybody done this before or have any suggestions?

I have not done this but a stepper motor should have the torque you are looking for and is also bi directional. You can run them from a microcontroller such as an Rpi
