Monti Shaded by Rock - Should I Remove the Dead Tissue?

Hi All,


I have a pair of Monti frags gifted to me by a fellow reefer. I placed it in a spot that was partially shaded by a rock above (silly me, right?) Despite that, it has continued to grow like a champ, but the area centered under the rock face has now become a dead zone. You can see that area bordered in yellow in the pic above.

Should I plan to remove the dead tissue from that area, or leave it be? I'd like to see continued growth from the Monti, but I'm not sure if it's wasting resources on that section and/or dirtying the water column.

Would love some insight from experienced Monti-keepers!
