This morning I was on automatic as I went through my testing Saturday morning routine. I have been meaning to do a water change on my freshwater tank. I use tap and dechlorinator for that one. I had a bucket in my hand that I was going to dump into the freshwater tank of water ready to go and my youngest stopped me. Put the bucket down and went to tend to her. Came back and my addled brain decided that the water needed to go to top off my 40 gallon softy tank. I got up to the rim of the tank and something felt wrong so I didn’t pour and then all of a sudden I had the realization that this was not the right water. I doubt a couple of gallons of dechlorinated tap would’ve nuked my tank but I really don’t want to find out.

What mistakes have you almost made or made that could’ve caused a lot of headaches when you were sleep deprived or just on automatic?

I haven’t actually been close, but I have been meaning to move some things around in my basement utility room for exactly this reason. My sump and fuge are in that room along with all my chemicals. About 5 ft away is a sliding door for my walk-out basement and a hot-tub/spa right outside. So my spa chemicals (chlorine, bromine, pH adjusters) are actually sharing space with my reef chemicals. Accident waiting to happen!

I can see that going badly. I’m in the process of overthinking all my routines now and there’s a high chance I might nuke one of my tanks based on just what I do every day so looks like I’m going to have to build in some engineering controls and quality systems to reduce the likelihood of that happening. Annoyed at myself right now to be honest!

Sounds like you need to establish a reef control strategy. What are your CQA’s, CPPs, and KPIs? :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

I've been really lucky in that regard. But I think I MAY have gotten close and found a potential issue with the planning of my new tank. I have yet to take measurements but the new tank I want is 48x39x25. 48 and 25 are no issue. But I forgot to measure if the 39 will fit through the doorway and through any gaps from the doorway to the living room. If we get French doors to the dining room (in planning stage), it's no big deal there, but my house is really just a series of small rooms that equal 1800 Sq ft. Can't believe I didn't take this into consideration. Wow. Yay 60 years old!

Impossible to establish CQA’s in a reef tank. I’d never be able to release product to get through approval unless I want to give myself greater than 50% CV on any of these which render them meaningless!!!!! :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Can it go in sideways? The 25 will definitely fit through any door.

Gotta measure the 39. I'll measure it out today, but that is really the crux of the issue. But your right, the 48.can go in as up/down or straight in. 25 is no issue either.

If all else fails you could drop it in with a crane and use the hole in your roof for solar tubes! :face-with-tears-of-joy:

You joke about this but I love the idea of a sun lit reef. There are some gorgeous ones out there. The long winters is MA are keeping my roof safe. If I ever move somewhere without snow roofs beware!

I would also love to have a sunlit reef, but not sure what the latitude limit is. I can’t imagine my reef would appreciate the short days of winter here in the midwest, even though we don’t get as much snow here in Missouri. The closest I can get is my metal halide lighting. Much more natural look than the saturated blues most folks run with LEDs. This pic is not filtered :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I’ve thought a lot about metal halides but I’m a huge fancy torch and hammer fan and those are definitely nicer under LEDs. Maybe some day I’ll do a mix of both.
