Mine has never harmed any shrimp.
In some cases, when the shrimp and snails are established and in system first, they are generally safe

Mine has been a model citizen for 2 years, and doesn't bother my cleaner shrimp.
However, I ignorantly tried to add a peppermint while the lights were on, and Mr Melanarus made quick work of him the second it hit the water.

Mine would occasionally peck at the established cleaner but then the cleaner would tickle the heck out of the Melanurus so it would go away. Replaced it with a smaller cleaner shrimp and came out in the morning to my Melanurus AND my Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel tearing it up. Not sure if it died overnight or if the Melanurus got it and the CB was just sharing the spoils. Considering a Coral Banded Shrimp but don't want another expensive snack. My Melanurus definitely makes meals out of hermits and snails though.

I have a Melanurus coming next week. From everything i've read, it's hit or miss. You never know. My cuc is expendable (hermit crabs and snails). I plan on introducing several more wrasse over the coming months and for me the wrasse are more important than shrimp and cuc.
