The the OP title said magnetic frag racks should not exist....not they are ugly, total troll title. Further in the text the op did go into "doing things the right way" so you don't need them, like building a separate system.

I use them occasionally when fragging stuff or new aquires. I generally try to take pictures without them in view along with the mandatory glass scrape.

FWIW I've had IMO unwarranted criticism of tank pictures on this forum, for awhile I didn't like posting pictures because of this reason.
It’s important to read more than just the title and to use context clues when reading things. With that said people usually hate my aquariums as well when I’ve posted them here. Haters gonna hate. Not gonna be sad about it.

I recently stopped by a person's house that would have had an otherwise beautiful aquarium with the exception of these magnetic frag racks all over the glass.

In my mind, a display aquarium should be exactly that, your display. Mucking it up with tiny pieces of coral on grow out magnetic frag racks, in my opinion, completely defeats the purpose of having an area to grow out Coral before adding it to your system.

Every time I have built an aquarium I have added space to have a connected frag system. I will Grant you that I have more opportunity than most to do that as I have always created a dedicated space for aquarium equipment. Still, I have got to say what's the point if you're not making your display exactly that, a display!

Please by all means change my mind. I want to hear the opposing argument!
I definitely can see your point, but in a perfect world. I do have a frag tank, but it is not plumbed into my DT's sump so the parameters are different. The current frag tank is newer so it is not completely up to speed yet. Before the frag tank was running it was completely awful, I wanted my display back. I will say, by having my frag racks in my display, I wasn’t messing with the main corals because I couldn’t see them as well. Also even now I have a Zoa rack in the upper corner because the lighting/flow is just right and they grow like weeds there. So its hard saying, "I can put them in my frag tank, and yes they will grow, OR I can put them in this sweet spot and they will GROW..."
But I prefer not to go back to this...
Also just as distracting are Gyres and seaweed clips...
I would say Vortechs, But we like to be elitist and show them off because they are so dang expensive...

An individual who has been one of my best friends for going on 20 years.

You have no idea how that conversation happened as you weren't there. But go ahead and be offended for others.
I hate when this happens. I have a few friends that I have known since way back who we feel close enough to talk any way we need too because we've spent a lot of time together in all kinds of situations. We laugh when someone misspeaks and stay on course with the replies.

In other places, I have made a few posts along the way that my readers missed completely what I was trying to say, and occasionally I stepped upon a lot of readers toes in my postings. I have tried to modify my use of posting communications to avoid these kinds of situations and confusion between myself and readers. I figure most readers don't like me and the rest are thinking about it.

The good news is that this thread is still open for replies, which means the miscommunication hasn't gotten totally toxic so that the Mods have had to shut it down.

I too was shocked :anguished-face:slightly by the word phrasing of the original question, but if we are all friends on here we surely can take someone asking why we have a stupid looking frag rack in the center of the view panel and not get agro with the replies? Pop a beer and take it easy folks, unless you have never mis posted a poorly worded discussion question?

I think my first mis post was my second or third posting on here?

Ask me about Metal Halides & Bare Bottoms.:thinking-face:

I'm sure we would all love to have some amazing multi tanked system plumbed all though the house all automated and amazing. But no matter how much we live the hobby life has it limits for some of us. We don't all have a basically endless budget. I personally feel spoiled and all i have is a 50 gal aio. Yeah it has a magnetic rack tucked away up top in the back for some little acros. But other than that. Each person's tank is their own journey and their own little spot. You may have a 500 gal aquarium full of amazing fish. Fish i probably wouldn't know because my face is smashed in the glass staring at a goni. Or hunting eBay for my next deal on a shroom. Hell my lfs' are TSA and WWC and i still shop online because i can't always afford retail. But what i have is mine it's healthy and I'm happy. Oh and this morning i didn't wake up hoping whatever your name is approved of me. Sorry i didn't notice your name it shows the relevance of your opinion. Hope you have a great day in whatever land you live. But I'm glad the rest of us don't care what others think we're just getting by and trying to help each other on the way.

We think that magnetic frag racks can play a pivotal role in coral acquisition and acclimation for someone who does not have a separate tank.

What needs to be mentioned here rather than the sight of said rack in your tank, is the possibility of heavy metal contamination from poorly made racks. We see this all the time and it can wreck your system. Check your magnets regularly.

Check out new start up STR8 UP Reefing and their STR8 UP Frag racks. They seem to have addressed the concerns some have with traditional frag racks. No magnets, innovative Vertical Multi-Tier frag racks, simple design and aesthetically pleasing. https://www.instagram.com/str8_up_reefing?igsh=YTQwZjQ0NmI0OA==&utm_source=qr

Yea Cause this is much better lol

Okay. It would not work with my main house decor but in the apartment this could be cool as words I can’t say here.
Your corals always look so healthy and vibrant.

I didn't care for Flame Angels or Frag racks when I started....Now the Angel has been in my tank for a year and there is a frag rack in my etsy cart.

I have changed my mind so many times in this hobby which is part of the fun to me.

I collect coral and am out of space and have a new tank to set up. A lot on my racks are items I’m collecting / growing out so my new build can start with items larger than plugs. I continue to buy coral as I feel it’s equally a part of my new build as is the equipment and I can’t do everything at once. I have vision for my new build with both gear and livestock, and this is all part of planning / prepping for it

That said, I also like the look of a neon reef and don’t want a natural one. Been there. Did that almost two decades. I now want my tank to look like the vendors photos. Those vibrant photos are what pull you in to buy the coral. I want that look and have morning and evening lighting on heavy blue. Afternoon is more white. But I do like the crazy neon look

I will admit I can’t wait to move these over to the new build and get rid of most of the racks. I just don’t have space to make a dedicated frag system
While it is visually distracting in an image, I have never had frag racks interfere with my observance of someone's tank or system that I haven't seen before. Usually when looking a new tank they have so much to take in that a few frag racks if anything gives a closer view at a few corals.
