Hello! I’m a huge fan of the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, and would love to own one some time in the future.

I’m aware of their specialised tank requirements and feeding habits, and would like some advice on where to get suitable tanks for them. I’ve heard they need Acrylic Tanks due to being smashers! Alongside with this, suitable food. I will likely do a mix of frozen and live feedings, due to price hikes and a feeder tank system being expensive (for now!). I’m weary of going to any old aquarium for interior tank decor, and if anyone’s got any recommendations, that would be much appreciated!

Next big step is where to get the critter from - I’ve gone around to several aquariums, and only one has had a Mantis Shrimp in stock, but it was a plain one. I’m weary of purchasing online, and I would prefer to order one and pick it up due to shipping to my location being incredible hit or miss (half the time they don’t even attempt delivery, or leave it out in the elements).

I’m based between Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, but can travel if required. Thanks for any help!

No help on finding one for your location but I think you will find the thing about them “smashing” glass tanks to be mostly a myth and if they are punching glass it’s most likely bc the enclosure is too small. Every mantis is different and I think it will be trial and error and far as what they like. My peacock is still a baby but is already a fairly picky eater and prefers live and fresh foods to frozen. He will throw anything he doesn’t like back out of his burrow at me.
As far as the inside of the tank there are several great YouTube videos on setting up a mantis tank. Lots of live rock, shell and rubble for them to move around. Lots of us use PVC pipes. My peacock loves his.
Good luck!

Hi mate.

My names Michael, setting up a new shop in North Lakes. I'd be more than happy to source a Peacock for you. Generally the ones we get from suppliers are quite big (10-14cm)

If that's fine, send me a message over Facebook and will ask the collectors to collect.

Thanks!
