Hi I'm Richard I am cycling a 75 gallon fish only tank. I'm on day 12. 9 days ago I added microbacter quick cycle. Prior to that I added quick start from Tetra. My question is this these are my reading since I started.
Set up. 10-24 23 added quick cycle from tetra.
Salinity 1.027
10-27-23 alkaline check 10.7
Day 2 10-27-23 Added quick cycle microbacter
A 1.0 ph 8.0 nitrite 0.50
Day 3 A 1.0 nitrite 3.0
Day 4 A 0.50 nitrite 5.0 ph 7.8 Salinity 25
Day 5 A 0.50 nitrite 5.0 ph 7.8 Salinity 25
Day 7 A 0.50 nitrite 5.0 Salinity 1.024
Day 8 A 0.00 nitrite 2.0 nitrate 160 plus salinity 1.024 ph 7.5
Day 9 A 0 nitrite 5.0Nitrate 5.0-10 At 9 am
Day 9 A 0 nitrite 5.0 nitrate 40 at 9 pm
Any opinions on this. I'm using RO water I have a fluval 307 canaster and am adding a second fluval on Wednesday. I have 3 big pieces of live rock in tank I added 3 days ago.whats weird is my nitrite went down on Day 8 then back up on Day 9. Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you Richard. Happy reefing

Welcome to the money pit
Nitrite you want zero
Ammonia zero
Nitrate is not a big deal. Nice to have low but in a FO tank no biggie.
Looks good to me

Thanks I was just curious how the nitrite went from 5 to 2 then back to 5 in one day. So just leave it alone and keep testing daily?

Probably just a faulty reading, I personally wouldn't add anything until the ammonia and nitrite is zero for a week or so.

nitrite is not very important in a saltwater tank. What are the ammonia and the nitrate levels? This is the important info you left you. Zero ammonia and some measureable nitrates means the tank is cycled.

You are also cycling your tank with very little rock, there should be closer to a pound per gallon, so a 75 gallon tank shoud have about 65-75 lbs of rock. If you cycle your tank now and add more rock later, the tank will cycle again. You should get more now and bite the bullet now.

And I only see one tiny little powerhead in the tank, you should 2 good powerheads on both sides of the tank, to help create random flow patterns. One of the 2 poweheads should be aimed at the water surface to agitate the surface and help put oxygen into the water.

Also putting your light directly onto the lid like that is a fire a hazzard, its dangerous and you should correct that asap.

The fastest I went to zero nitrites was 12 days, the slowest was 45 days.

You're cycle is going successfully. Your ammonia is down to zero and it has made its way to nitrate. Awesome

I like to wait for zero nitrites. I started in freshwater and in that world nitrites are the killers. In the salt world the animals tolerate nitrites better. As a matter of fact, one thing you can do to help freshwater fish survive nitrite is to add a little salt.

You'll be ready to go fish shopping this weekend for sure. Some would argue that with zero ammonia you're ready now.
