Just wondering if anyone wants to share their long term 3+ years review on their simplicity skimmer? I’m looking at buying a DC option to replace my older BM curve 3.5 with a quieter option. The BM still works well but the pump is louder than I’d like and I’m hoping to get a newer unit that pulls more skim as well. The Simplicity unit is sold for $300 here in Canada, so if the reviews are great, it’s a very good option for my current budget. Looking for both positive and negative reviews.

Thanks for the input guys.

Zig.

I have four Simplicity skimmers. Three dc120, and one dc240. The oldest is six years, the newest is two years old. These work great as long as they are kept clean. I clean the cups once a week and the body once a year. They are quiet and efficient. No problems with any of them.

Appreciate that. I d pull my BM and clean the impeller/ body once a quarter, the cup is usually once a month, so hopefully that would in line with what you’re recommending on the Simplicity. Do they have a rubber footing to dampen the noice transfer from the body to the sump floor?

I honestly haven’t noticed if they have rubber feet, but there isn’t a lot of noise from them. I can verify later when I get home, but they are pretty quiet. I made a video on adjusting them and can share it if you’d like.

Cheers. I actually did some digging around on here prior to posting and came across your video. Quite helpful. I figure I’ll just place it in a bucket with tank water from the next water change and run it until it breaks in. The advantage of not waiting till the current gear breaks before you evergreen..

I honestly didn’t have to wait long with these. If I remember correctly, it was a few days to start pulling good skimmate. Your mileage might vary though. But keeping the cup necks clean and minor adjustments help keep them running smooth. Good luck!

Also caught in between getting the 120 or the 240. I have a RS Reefer 300 with about 70g of total water volume with sump less rocks and sand, with a fairly heavily stocked tank with plans for more coral. I’ve read that an undersized skimmer is better than an oversized for pulling skim but my bioload may ramp up for a 240 eventually.

the simplicity IMO is an ok skimmer it really depends on your budget. I have a 240 on my 120 gallon tank. not an easy skimmer to adjust properly. i constantly have to tweak it. when its running well it pulls out alot. that being said for a little more money id go with something else. Reef octopus or nyos is your best bet. I regret buying the simplicity for another 150 bucks you can have a more reliable work horse skimmer. Dont waste your money. buy right or buy twice.
