I wish I knew how to make a poll. If you do, please do so.

Years ago, I had three tanks and for the most part, I left the tops open and we paid for it with humidity in the house and it created some black (not mold, the other) yet when we go to one of our local reef/fish stores he leaves all his tanks with closed with glass lids and has no problems with gas exchange etc.... please list the others.

So which way do you go ?

Lids
No lids.

No lids for me. I don't like their function or their aesthetics.

Lidless for 17+ years, I currently have 3 lidless tanks. Exceptionally few jumpers over the years, and usually they are new additions that haven't settled in yet.

I have a one year old 5 ft long tank. I recently took of my custom made lid and within one week my Pintail Fairy Wrasse and female Davinci Clownfish jumped out sometime at night. I discovered both of their bodies in the morning. The lid will go back on after I catch the remaining clownfish and put it into an observation tank where I will try to get him to pair with a replacement clownfish.

No lid looks best and is convenient from a maintenance perspective. Unfortunately some fish love to jump!

I'm defiantly a believer in some type of screen, cover, or top. Just today my fairy wrasse jumped out as I was replacing the cover. He landed behind the tank, against the wall. I got him in a net, just barely. I had a Darwin clown jump once and I didn't find him till he was a crispy critter. It was a shame too, he was just starting to turn his life around.

My Pintail Fairy Wrasse initially jumped out while I was standing there observing the tank. I scooped him up quickly and put him back in. The next night he jumped out again when I was not around. For clownfish, I have had two jump out now. Unfortunately, it looks like a lidded life for my fish going forward.

I was lidless for over 20 years…. Counting FW maybe 40.

I have screen tops now. At least 5 jumpers in last 2 years, one of them 3 times in 5 days.

We had a 29g all in one and had a goby that was missing, so my wife acetated me that one of our cats had him in it's mouth, so I calmly told him, to release him and he did. So we looked him over and put him back in the tank, and he swam off like no me deal. lol What about these plastic almost pillows and egg crate that were so popular a while back ?
