Unistrut works too. If u want to bend aluminum bar stock let me know how thick and I'll see if the bend at work can do it.

If you can come up with some mild steel flat bar and a diagram. I could take it into work and cut and welded it.If you prefer aluminum that can also be done.to honest I made my stand out of wood.

It would need to be something like 2" x 3/8" . I will have to get a length measurement to see how long I need it to be.

The conduit was not a bad idea either

The problem with the bar is that it is going to bend a bit when you put weight on it. It is going to be difficult predicting exactly how much. The result will be that the fixture will not be level.

I got two 8 foot sections of 1/2 inch EMT conduit. Measured and cut them to desired height. Used a conduit bender and put a 90 degree bend in them. Spray painted them black. Secured each conduit to the back of the tank with 3 straps each. Voila! I can move them forward, backward, up, and down.

This was my very first tank and I wasn't sure how permanent it would be. So like you, I didn't want to mount anything from the ceiling or the wall. In hind sight, I'm glad I did it that way because I am in the process of getting a much larger and nicer tank from Reef Savvy and placing it in a different part of the room. When the new tank replaces the old tank, I won't have holes in the ceiling or wall to deal with. So the conduit was a decent solution that doesn't look too bad.

90 degree bend

Each one secured with 3 straps

Let me know if I can help in any way.

That will work perfectly, Chris. How long would you suggest it needs to be down the stand. Do you have access to a conduit bender? I can certainly spray paint and used the conduit clamps to mount it. Will I need two pieces or just one with that light?

I ran mine down the entire back of the stand. It's on the back, no one sees it, and it adds stability.

I would use two pieces.

Yes I have access to a bender. Just let me know when you need it.

My tank is 24 inches deep, and I'll get my stand height in just a minute.

Edit****

My stand is 4ft 4inches. How high do the lights need to be Obote the water?

I'd do about 2 feet above the water. That would allow you to be able to adjust with the cables that will be included with your light. The conduit is cheap but you'll also need some conduit clamps to bolt the conduit to the back of the stand. I'd secure at least 2 feet of conduit to the stand, another 2 feet for the tank depth, and another 18" to 2 feet to bend over the tank. 12 feet of conduit plus at least 4 conduit clamps to secure it to the stand and you'll be out the door for around $20 (just guessing, been awhile). Looks like Chris went down to the floor when he clamped it to the back so perhaps a little more but shouldn't cost too much. Home Depot or Lowes will carry this.

I can probably get the conduit and straps when I get the bender.

See my first picture of the piles of conduit........if you've ever heard of Massey Electric.....Mr. Massey is my next door neighbor.

I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

I put the conduit about 2 feet above the tank. That way I have plenty of room to get the lights out of the way while I'm working in the tank. You're more than welcome to come over and look at it for yourself.
