So I got a new leather coral two weeks ago. Dipped it, super healthy at the store, about the size of a mans hand. polyps looked great looked like it was attached so I cut the nylon fishing line i loosely tied around its base to attach it in place. Much to my suprise, the base part of the stem against the rock just was rotted. I tried to get a picture of the rot but it really just fell away all over my tank. I took it out and did an iodine dip on it and then washed it in clean water and put it back inbetween two rocks.

From my search it seems like people say to cut it. However it rotted all the way up to the cap. If i cut the stem completely off will the cap grow a new stem? Kinda a loss what to do. For now i blew off all the rotted parts and I took a picture while it was in the bath, A bit confused as its polpys came out within 2 days and seems like it was doing great. I checked my tank parameters and everything seems good. None of my other 30 corals are open and happy. Any ideas on what to do?

You can see on these pictures where the base was fully. Id say it lost about half of the stem on one side. Some of it is a bit rough looking.

Is this statement correct or its a typo? If none of your 30 corals are happy, then it will help to share the parameters.

If your corals are happy and only the leather is upset, I would suggest to ensure it is in a high flow area, they need flow, they also like light.

But a tank picture will help to see whats around the leather coral and whats really going on.

Wow what a typo! Yes all corals are happy will upload a tank Pic now. I should mention that the torch in the back just ate a few mysis shrimp from when i fed them about 10 minutes ago. Closed up cause its feasting.

I also think the flow may have caused the stalk to bump repeatedly against the rock causing it to be damaged and decay. That's just my theory

Did the store sell it to you unattached? Typically for a leather they are sold attached to a rock. Then you glue that rock where you want.

I’ve not had experience trying to get a larger toadstool to attach. Only small cuttings of the cap.

yeah i got it detached as it was imported that size. I paid about 60 (im in korea so coral is cheap) bucks for it, he gave me instructions on how to attach it but I think the stem was banging on the rock so it was repeatedly getting bruised until it mushed away. I will watch the flesh and if I think its getting worse I guess Ill chop the stem and then try to get the cap to attach to the rock as if I cut it sadly I will have to cut the whole stem off as its damaged all the way up to the base of the cap.

yes it will.
Ive taken a large one of them and completely chopped it up into small pieces. even cutting the stem and cap into multiple square fargs, The stem will regrow a new cap, and the caps will regrow new stems.
it just takes a while.

Go figures. Leathers are pretty awesome then. I've only had a few small ones. A devils hand and some neon Kenya tree frag but I guess if it doesnt heal I'll chop the stem off
