So I recently got my hands on a brand new 150g for free, which I’m not setting up yet due to lack of space… but when I’m in a different living arrangement, I would love to start a reef tank. The thing is though that I want just a few larger fish instead of a bunch that are only a few inches. I adore both puffers and triggers and I think that they’re the coolest fish ever with the most amazing personalities, but those are not reef safe. I know tangs can be reef safe due to them technically being herbivores, but I only want one tang in my tank. Anyone have experience with some other reef safe options that will also have cool personalities? I know it might seem dumb to some people but I like to have the same kind of relationship with my fish that I have with my cats and dogs lol.

My Powder Blue is my favorite. He’s pushing 8 inches and is about as wide as he is long these days. Problem is, he’s a ******* and won’t allow me to add any new fish.

There are fish like groupies that likely will leave coral and snails alone but will eat shrimp/crabs. Lionfish I think fall under this category as well.

While not large Anthias are large tank only and reef safe so if you want something you couldn't have before that is an option.

A rabbitfish or a foxface perhaps? I am especially fond of the bluespot rabbitfish, seeing one in person I was amazed by how bright the colors on these are.

Dwarf Angels come in a lot of varieties and I have a personal favorite towards the flame angel. You can always get some smaller fish like fire fish, gobys, gammas, pair of clowns, hawk fish. There is a lot you can do with 150g!

My dwarf angel is a coral nipper and is reef safe with caution at best.

Some ideas for you: Fox Face, Cowfish, larger Anthias, Swallowtail Angel (most reef safe of all angel fish and a solid citizen)

Ooo Ive been looking into that rabbit! Beautiful. My dwarf lion I would not put with corals to be honest. She was in a reef and had a habit of perching on my corals, irritated them enough that they just started to melt. But she is an amazing fish personality wise! A marine betta is a very cool fish, shy at first but an interesting personality. Every time mine sees me looking at him he turns around and sticks his bum out at me lol. He thinks his little eel camo will work on me but it doesnt! Triggers are cool too for reefs. They have a habit of eating shrimp and crabs. I have one that even eats small fish so thats something to keep in mind!

Oh yeah I would absolutely love a lionfish! We have one in the 750g display at work and I feed him every day and it’s such a rewarding experience. They might be a tad bit large for my liking but I’ll have to do more research on the dwarf species. We occasionally get in orange spot rabbits and I love the look of them!

I’ve definitely heard mixed things about dwarf angels so I’ll have to see about specific ones, but they’re super pretty!

Meet El Heffe (the boss) - kind of reef safe and an amazing fish albeit a bit bossy. No zoa's and have to be careful with other softies but otherwise my favorite fish out of many in 2 tanks. When ticked off, he actually emits a loud growl that can be heard around the house due to the deep bass.

Ah yeah hopefully my boss can figure something out, they’re usually pretty good about finding stuff like that for me

When you say reef safe do you mean won’t eat corals or all inverts because if you don’t want shrimp then that opens up large wrasse and eels (see the description by name lol). For personality no wrasse beats the dragon but it is aggressive. If you want impressive size but peaceful look into Anampses(tamarin) wrasse. For beauty look into the Coris wrasse (note that I mean the genus Coris and there are no such thing as a yellow or green coris wrasse).

For eels you could have any echidna eel or a zebra or a snake eel. All are fairly fish safe.

I've kept blue throat triggers without issue. I have a similar relation ship with all of my pets as you so I totally understand. I just dumped a ton into a larger tank so my tang gang has more swim room.
I’ve been doing research on these since seeing this comment, and I’ve decided I’m definitely gonna get one :D
