Hi All - Looking for some input here. I have a 60g cube I purchased used several months ago and slowly have been working on adding/replacing stuff. The setup came with no powerheads and I purchased a pair of Hydor Koralia 750-850s, along with the Hydor wave controller. Based on a couple of months of use, I think the flow is too much for what I'm wanting in my tank. Would like to gather some thoughts from others.
Right now my substrate is less than a 1/2 inch of small grain aragonite. I'm planning to replace this with smaller grain sand. I can already tell the size/flow of my current powerheads will be a problem with sand. I also recently picked up a clove polyps frag which seems to be blowing around a little too much. At times it looks like those palm trees you see on news clips of hurricanes hitting the coastal areas.
So, I'm going to downsize the powerheads, but wondering how much smaller I should really go? The next step down would be a 550-600gph, but I wonder if I might want even smaller than that and go with one of the larger nano size Koralias?
I'm a beginner still, so looking to keep fish and easy corals. Not looking to jump into LPS with high flow rate needs. I want to have the powerheads for extra circulation, without creating sandstorms in the tank. Would be great if there was a way to just dial down my current power heads, but my understanding is that's not good to do. Can't just plug the Koralias into a standard lamp dimmer and dial them back a little?
