Kick rocks: What do you use for aquascaping other than rocks?

Grab a Florida purple barnacle cluster off the internet. They make amazing natural decor and provide holes for various hole-loving fish. They're practically nirvana for midas blennies

I incorporated oyster shells that I picked up in Appalachicola into my tall structure. They make perfect hiding places. My royal gramma loves them.

I use oyster shells to attach torches, frog spawn etc to lay on the sand - great stability, easy to move around for flow and light, and can add zoas to the shell - also provides shelter for polychaete CUC...

Some are from Appalachicola too - smile

Maybe I'm just paranoid but I did soak it in rodi water for a few hours before putting it in the tank. Also don't be surprised if the little critters take a few weeks to recognize it as natural habitat. Once it started growing tank crud there was a turf war between several different cave dwellers for the space which the midas blenny won lol. Took about 2 weeks

I've used clear acrylic rods to support my rockwork and prevent rockslides.

Additionally I am developing a 3D printed rock that can hold standard reef plugs. I am currently in the prototype phase, but hope to have it available soon. It is such PITA to drill rock and attaching a mounting base seems like a better idea to prevent unnecessary coral loss. Plus, way easier to change locations for flow, lighting requirements as well as fragging and treating corals.

The tiles and other ceramic rocks out there look too unnatural even when covered by marine life.

Is there anything special you have to do with 3d prints? Like certain filament or post print treatment?

If you are 3D printing something reef related that is going to be wet, make sure you use PETG. It takes some time to get the settings dialed in since it is more prone to stringing, but once you get it right it is a wonderful material to use. Otherwise it can cause some frustration.

My light spill shades/covers are made out of PLA since they aren't constantly getting wet and they are an easier material to work with.

When I go on beach vacations I always grab some shells or rubble with my kid and add to the tank. I made this cool rubble pile that is like a dome so it has an area underneath for gobies or CuC's to chill out.

I used dead coral skeletons as my tank layout material. I did not use live rock or dead rock. It is now completely covered with lime algae and looks just like rock. Just like how the original coral reefs were formed.

Aquascapes made of dead coral skeletons

My coral tank layout is made up of dead coral skeletons. I assembled a large table coral base with a variety of coral skeletons. So far, the coral is growing actively without any problems. I'm sure you'll have a dead coral skeleton in your tank that will be part of your layout before you know...

Sorry for late reply. I use super glue and BRS insta-set superglue accelerator. Glue one or two pieces at a time, spray, wait 15 seconds, continue building.
