Unsure what's causing all the issues with my Nyos. Two weeks ago everything was running well, and then one day it just started overflowing like crazy. No sump water level changes. I had to adjust it from nearly fully closed (raise water level) to now nearly fully open (lower water level.) No clear reason why, but it's operating well again, despite the 180 adjustment needs.

Even if you go with all new dry rock, you're bringing 20+ lbs of live rock from your current system aren't you? Seems to me like you have a nice 'base' of LR to quick-start your new tank no matter how much dry you end up needing.

That is very strange indeed. I know certain chemicals or additives can cause skimmers to go nuts. Maybe it's something like that?

You make a good point. The rock I have that was previously dry + the couple lbs of aquacultured is definitely full of life. It could seed everything else. Hmmm. I'll have to think on it. Maybe live isn't necessary.

I'm admitedly very nervous of the tank transfer. I've seen so much success lately, I am scared of moving backwards.

Other than when I started phyto dosing 1.5mo ago, no other additives have been used in my tank, and especially no chemicals. I guess it could have to do with having higher nitrates/phosphates than before, but it was just so odd to happen all of a sudden.

I've read a few threads on how long it takes dry rock to become 'live' rock. I think it depends on a lot of things, namely how much 'live' you had in your system to 'seed' the dry with. General consensus seems to be 6mo to 1yr. Obviously 6mo is only possible if you've got a great seed base, and I think with all your coral + live rock, you have the best possible 'seed'. I feel like my system will be closer to the 1yr mark due to starting with 100% dry rock.

I started with 100% dry rock. I didn't add the FL aquacultured until probably 5-6 months in. I think the downfall of many folks with dry is they're waiting out long cycles and adding coral slowly. If I did a dry rock start again, I would add as much as I could ASAP and be okay if some didn't make it.

But back to the original point. The early stages of dry are rough and I guess my paranoia is reliving those days. I saw a lot of my coral struggle in the early days. I equated it to alk and nutrient swings at the time, but I'm not finding that's an issue anymore. My PO4 can swing considerably with no issue. Alk is generally stable, but I've had decent swings in the last couple months that I've yet to see cause an issue. I've become a bacterial diversity believer. Thinning it out worries me.

I'm a terrible plumber, but she's leak free and flowing some tap water. I have a lab in the basement now. My clown during all of this decided it was time to be hosted. I'm exhausted.

Thank you!! I couldn't be happier with the tank dimensions. Really glad I went with the white bottom too.

She's almost full of RO water. Should have salt thrown in tonight.
