Hello

I’ve been having some problems with both of my moon jellyfish!

They have both decreased in size and changed shape dramatically and I have noticed on my larger jelly that the end of its bell has kind of curved outwards and hasn’t been pulsing as much or even at all.

I have ordered a brine breeding kit along with the eggs as I know the size issue can be down to malnutrition but I have still been trying to feed them both with frozen brine shrimp and powdered food also.

I’ve also noticed some holes in their bells and they both just overall look pretty scrunched up. I did a water change today just in case there was an issue with the levels and salinity is now all okay.

Any help would be really appreciated!

These bells are located where the mouth is and can be distorted with lack of food or stress. This type of jellyfish is good at rebuilding its own cells and questions, , , is it the bells or the hair like threads on their vein like tentacles?
If food supply is an issue, they will eat rotifiers and pods although they are rarely suspended and also small guppies.
Assure the light is low intensity and also salinity does not get high

I know the jellyfish expert from the local aquarium. I could put you in touch. Would you like me to do that?

Edit: I sent her the link. If @dodojojo writes on here she’s an expert with jellyfish and you should listen.

I have been summoned.

Jello!

To start, pictures are always a great thing to include. I can guess as to what you are referring to with your jellies, but visual confirmation is always a bonus.
That being said, the biggest issues when it comes to jellies (esp moons) becoming malformed are water quality, flow, and nutrition. Some of these parameters can depend on the specific moon species that you're working with. Can you share where you received your moons from?

It sounds like you have an understanding of water quality so I won't delve into that. As for the other two, flow is the trickiest to get "right" and nutrition can be a relatively simple fix.

As a basic rule of thumb, if your jellies are balling up then the flow is too fast and if the jellies are starting to cosplay as pancakes then the flow is too slow. Generally the aim of jelly tanks is to have the flow optimized so that the incoming water is just fast enough to prevent any of your living goo from coming in contact with the walls of the tank.

To address nutrition, the live brine shrimp is your best step forward in that regard. Refrigerated food like pacpods or oyster feast are also good supplemental options. I personally work with mostly live foods so I am not the end-all-be-all resource for the most available hobbyist friendly options.
Travis with The Jellyfish Warehouse (on insta, FB, reddit, YT, etc) is a great resource for home-sector type education. He is super responsive and absolutely knows his stuff. Chad Widmer's book 'How to Keep Jellyfish in Aquariums' is pretty much the gold standard for home jellyfish aquaria. It is a little outdated just because the nature of how fast we keep progressing the skills of Jelly care but everyone still uses it as a base for learning.

I hope this was a little helpful and feel free to ask more questions! Good luck with your gelatinous kiddos :)

( also thanks for the summons, @Slocke )
