Speaking of niche knowledge and out of ordinary things… how’s the elbow doing?

Not even close… its like putting all of those on a resume but when it comes to interviewing your a complete noob and have zero in depth actual knowledge or experience. Just regurgitating info from forums and what you or to your buddy heard from another friend.

Or in Adam’s case, over 20 years of reefing and propagating coral. I bet he knows a few peripheral things that go with that.

Perhaps, but still just a hobbyist with a business. Last I checked not an actual Marine biologist with a doctorate writing academic papers…

Noone thinks this is kinda a sadistic pleasure? We put ourselves through emense pains for the pleasure of growing corals... this has been one of the biggest roller coasters in the hobby world.

I think you misinterpret this thread. He is not suggesting that reefing makes you an expert in those fields. Just more exposed to them than the average person.

A nerdy niche for sure. I've been lucky enough to learn at a young age that I don't give a **** what people think of the things I like!

I talk about the hobby to people when they ask, but most people don't understand, and honestly don't care about our little pieces of the ocean.

Whenever I talk to my wife about it, her eyes glass over within 30 seconds! She loves that I love it, and 2 of my kids enjoy it, but other than that, most people really don't care.

As for your business Adam, you're killing it, and you're clearly not a hobbyist (facepalm). It's interesting how some people feel you need a little slip of paper to mean that you're well versed in a topic, and possibly even a leader in your field.

Keep killing it Adam!...my BattleTank (5 gallon) with 11 of your corals are thriving...and I don't think that is all me!

There are many, MANY experts in various fields that don't have a degree. And many many "experts" with those degrees/certificates that don't really know much or practice the field they are in.

Book smarts to street smarts. Those who know and do, and those who think they know but never do.

My husband has been a mechanic and auto body shop owner for over 20 years. No formal schooling or certificates. All self taught or learned from other old school types. So many people keep pouring in with issues no other mechanics can figure out yet somehow my man can fix it. I consider him an expert in his field. Literally anything with an engine he can fix. Small engine, lawnmowers, atvs, snowmobiles, all autos, diesels, heavy diesels like semis and heavy equipment. He's even fixed half the golf cart fleet for our local golf course.

Sometimes experience, especially over decades, is better than just reading from a book in a classroom and getting a slip of paper for it.

I foresee a new battle slogan…maybe theme song too. Change up No Doubt from I’m just a girl in the world….to I’m just a hobbiest with a business. I want a shirt! Battlecorals….just a hobbiest with a business…
I personally think being called a hobbyist is one of the best compliments to get in Reefing. To me, a hobbyist is someone who enjoys an activity, strives to learn more about it, and gives back to other hobbyists in their community. Adam certainly fits that description, and a lot more. I don’t need to see a document either. Adam is clearly a professional in reefing. He doesn’t just import coral in, chop them up, and sell them. He keeps them, studies them, grows them out for years (even decades) then shares them at ridiculously low prices. All something we can strive for as hobbyists ourselves.

Next coral that goes up, or next time he asks for name suggestions. "Dude really?" Will be in my tank.

I mean, we all get up on the wrong side of the bed every now and then. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I have been known to immortalize some of my favorite posters though. Who can forget the Bo-so-dingi!
