Is this Algae, Dino or Cyano?

Hey guys,

55 gallon with 2 zebra barred and 1 fire fish goby. 8 trochus, 2 conch, 3 nesarius, some hermits, purple urchin and skunk cleaner. Couple zoas and a toadstool. Tank been running for 6 months, doing a ten gallon water change every 10 days or so. Using RO for changes. The fish have only been in the tank for a few days but I have been fighting this for months now.

I have this growing on my glass, I get a slight dusting if brown on rocks and sand at times. I can scrape/scrub glass and get it off, but it comes back with a vengeance every time within just a few days. What is it? And what can I do about slowing it down or ending it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Might be diatoms.

Its diatoms and will wipe easily with a sponge. Diatoms are a brown algae that typically appear in a tank which has just completed its cycle but they can also appear in an established reef tank and looks ugly but in most cases are harmless and feed mainly off of silicates as well as dissolved organic compounds, phosphate and nitrates. Tap water can contain silicates and is a good way to get a bloom if you use it to mix salt or to replace water that evaporated from the tank. Using an RODI unit helps, although you can still get diatoms with an RODI unit if the cartridge that removes silicates becomes expired.
Diatoms are typically harmless and can be beaten once their food source is gone.
Some cleaner crew to help control it are : Cerith snails, Nerite snails and Trochus snails and also Astraea snails are effective at removing diatoms.

Do you have any flow in the tank? Lack of flow will promote algae growth like that.

There are no snails in your pics, snails love eating algae off the glass.

The rocks look like they just came out of the box. If you had not said 6 months I would have thought the tank just cycled.

I also have rocks that look like this, is that an aptasia in the second pic?

I have a good sized power head on one end blowing down the front glass, I think I should get another at opposite end moving water down the back glass. I have 8 trochus snails and a purple pin cushion urchin. How many trochus snails do you think would be good for a 55gal?
