Hello,

There is a gentleman in my local area selling this lamp with the details below:

Hamilton Halide/VHO aquarium light with cooling fans and mount. 2 175 watt halide lights, 2 T12 VHO lights and 2 Moon lights

I've never heard of these lamps and am trying to find out if it's worth the buy. $100.00

Thanks

for $100 I'd would definitely buy a dual MH hamilton fixture.
Any chance you would know where I could find this particular lamp or how much it would be new? I found a couple Hamilton lamps from their own site or on BRS, but each one I found was a 250 watt with like 4 T5 bulbs. This one is only a 175 watt. Would this work well for a 55 gal. tank with SPS? Thanks

I know nothing about T5 light fixtures and the pros and cons of such. I currently run a cheap Galaxy LED light from Amazon for my tank.

Not much of a lumen difference between 175w and 250w
So you should be good there.
Just make sure you'll be able to get the replacement bulbs for that fixture, and check and make sure the ballast is sound.
Other than that, it's a good deal for dual mh...
If you can handle the heat, go for it

p.s.
This isn't a t5 fixture... it's a mh fixture with t5 supplements

I'm pretty new to this and terminology. I'll have to look up what all that means exactly. If you had a choice between this fixture and a full spectrum led unit; which would be preferred? Thanks for the replies!

For lps and zoas... t5 all blue+ 1 purple+/ or actinic

For sps... radion pro, or t5 with coral+

VHOs are an older style lamp used before T5 became the new flourescent king. T5 with individual reflectors are more energy efficient so that's what's common today. VHOs are still great and you could definitely use that over a 55g and get great growth from SPS. If your budget is tight these might not be a good option though. You need to buy new bulbs and that could be another $100 easily. They are going to need to be replaced every 9 months as well and another 350+ watts on the electric bill.
