I know there are already a bazillion threads about clownfish aggression and species compatibility. Regardless, I can't help but feel a rush of anxiety when I start thinking about adding a new fish to my own tank.

Some old threads seem to suggest different clowns (ocellaris, maroon, true percula, etc.) are more territorial than others, or may be more tolerant to new tank additions. But I am at a loss trying to identify this pair.

* First, any guesses on exactly what kind of clownfish this pair is? Their faces have a unique, dark square on them and all I can guess is some kind of cross-bred ocellaris?

The tank itself is 9 months old, 14 gallon AIO. CUC of several kinds of snails and micro brittle stars. Parameters have been solid for months. The only coral is a Xenia frag (please don't judge). The clownfish are aggressive toward any snails that come near their nest, but generally ignore the rest of the tank. They are also more aggressive at night after the lights have gone off.

* Given all of that, I'd like to add one more fish to the tank. Is identifying the exact kind of clownfish important? Are different kinds of clownfish more or less likely to be compatible and/or less aggressive to different kinds of goby or even shrimp?

Again, I realize this information may exist elsewhere, but it would certainly help me to see a short discussion and maybe get some help identifying exactly what kind of fish I already have. They came from the LFS, but even they didn't seem to know either. At the time, they seemed like true experts -- but having learned here on r2r for several months, they don't seem to be any more knowledgeable than weekend hobbyists.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what kind of clowns they are, but they certainly are cool looking! :star-struck:

All clowns have the potential to show aggression, but there are definitely some that have worse reputations than others, as you said. If your clowns are showing aggression with CUC, I'm not sure adding a fish will result in a positive outcome. If you do decide to give it, make sure there are several good hiding places in your rockwork, as there aren't going to be many places for a fish to get away in a 14g if the clowns attack it. Maybe a small goby like you mentioned. But again, if they're already being territorial, I'm not sure it would work out in the end.

Good luck! :)

my suspicion is the aggression is 75% due to lack of space and 25% just the disposition of clowns in general.
Nano tanks are great but not all fish are great in Nano tanks.

Species is important, as certain species are very aggressive, Black foot, Maroon, Tomato...
Ocellaris, Percula and various hybrid or color of these two species are not. They are not sub species, unless you count black Ocellaris vs the orange Ocellaris as different sub species.
