Proper coral growth is something all of us reefers strive for, but what about when it starts to grow like crazy? Maybe it's Gsp that goes from a tiny frag into this massive colony, or it's a Zoa colony that goes from 4 polyps into 100. My question is do you consider coral overgrowth too much of a good thing or a bad thing. Photo Credit: @joshporksandwich

I think it's a good thing, we just have to plan proper barriers or sandbed separation to keep the aggressive growers at bay!

As Jake Adams always said, "Everything we put in our tanks will become a pest if given enough time."

Even the most prized and beautiful corals have one goal in mind: take up all real estate and be the dominating force. It is hard to envsion or imagine early on but a mature tank that settles in becomes a job to take care of at some point with all the growth and it is your job to trim that growth.

Part of the problem is a lot of us are guilty of not providing enough space in our tanks to allow for long term growth of our corals. We either upgrade, frag, or end up removing some of these pieces to create space. I still struggle with the gotta catch em all syndrome after all these years.

Depends on the coral........fast growing monti, a bad thing. High end acro, a good thing lol. I have shut down two SPS tanks now due to overgrowth and failure to keep things under control.

This is a very good breakdown of it!

Yes and no imo. I love the look that a zoa colony gives but I hate when it starts to take over, same thing with montis. I love them but they need to be separated from any other rockwork for me to enjoy them. Or have a barrier like an anemone blocking the path to the main rock setup. But otherwise I think coral overgrowth is a good thing.

Any growth is a success… But it shortens the time between refilling the dosing containers
