Hello all.
New here to reef2reef so i figured I’d post my nano reef as my 40b is currently not cooperating with me haha (gha battle taking place after protein skimmer pump died)
So purchased the tank back in November of last year. Due to back orders didn’t really receive the tank until February. Took me about 2-3 weeks to get around to getting it all setup. Then onto the rockwork. I knew I wanted a mix reef which meant my rockwork needed to be elevated more vertical. Basically I used a large donut piece and stood it up giving me the height I wanted.
I upgraded the return pump before ever plugging the og pump in haha. Went with a sicce 1.5 pump for higher return volume. I hope I never have to clean this chamber as I physically cannot reach into this compartment lol. Had to make my wife install it originally which leads me to changing my filter floss 3 times a week to ensure I have a clean return pump lol.
Tunze osmolator for the ato
I decided to go with the noobpysche k7 mini after reading the reviews back in September on R2R and with the discount code I think I was all in at 90$.
Purchased the uv sterilizer, helio nano heater and the media caddy from innovative marine and I basically just have 3 bags of nano chemi pure blue and filter floss in them; that’s it. Super simple setup.
Only gripe with the uv sterilizer is that it heats my tank by about 2 degrees over where I set my heater at Tank runs usually at 79 degrees heater is set at 77.
Took about 4 weeks to cycle the tank and then I dropped about 30 frags into the tank as I had a ton of store credit at my lfs due to a forced breakdown (bad roof job flooded my downstairs of the house).
Tank skipped the ugly phase. I’ve never dealt with any cyano etc.
Only recently started noticing hair algae and I believe I’ve found the culprit.
AB+ coral nutrition by Red Sea. I’ve been dosing daily due to bottle recommendations for about 3 months. And my 15g had this stubborn patch of gha.
Around the same time my 40g reef tank started getting a bunch of gha I attributed to protein skimmer pump dying. Now however I firmly believe that it’s AB+ coral nutrition that’s the culprit. I’ve moved to 1 dose per week until I see levels begin to dissipate.
I don’t notice levels of phosphate increasing but I am 100% positive it adds nitrates in my tank which is likely the cause of gha
Ok back to the build haha.
So yeah tanks never seen an ugly phase although neither my 40b reef or this tank did. And I started the tanks completely opposite of one another. I never anticipated getting a reef and was planning on fowlr tank for the 40b. 3 months lights off cycle with dry rock and got hooked. The nano was pretty much instantaneous within a month lights on since day one cycled. Although the nano I used about 13# of dry rock and about 1# of rock from a 10yr old reef tank.
I manually dose alk 1dkh per day approximately and mag and calcium weekly 1time.
The only thing I’d consider doing differently is bypassing the uv sterilizer for the protein skimmer by innovative marine.
And this is only because of how much heat the dang sterilizer causes.
The lighting choice I was super on the fence about. My 40g breeder I went with the nicrew hyperreef 150watt and have great success with that light. It’s almost too powerful. I was planning to get the 50w for the nano but after reading the reviews I had to try it.
The light is amazing. The build quality etc is all top notch. Even comes with its own mounting arm etc. I like the color of the light it produces and the corals seem to respond well also.
It’s incredibly powerful. At 50% intensity it’s about 350par at the top of my rocks and 200 in all corners. Honestly it’s a bit too high but my corals have adapted and are doing great.
My chaos orb zoas have multiplied like a plague although I wouldn’t consider this a bad thing.
The bad: the setup sucks. It’s WiFi connected and my phone constantly tries to connect with it for WiFi.
I like the options for slow ramp ups and downs which wouldn’t be possible without additional purchases from the hyperreef that I was considering.
The tanks been up about 6 months now and has been lights on since D1.
Stocking is 2 Reese clowns by ora farms and a Yasha goby.
Also a mesh media bag full of red gracillarea macro algae in the display. I like the look of it but I have to contain it. Lol
Handful of snails and pods and hermits.
Considering getting a peppermint shrimp very soon as I’m seeing some aiptasia and I hate aiptasia.
Thanks for reading and if you have questions about my build post a reply!
Happy reefing.
