Hello,

#fishmedic #jayhamdel #vetteguy53081

Starting to see some white spots on of course the one non quarantined fish in my tank. Any idea if this is Ich and next steps? Other fish don’t seem to be affected so far…

Thanks !

That does appear to be marine ich. The two best treatment choices require that you move all of the fish into a tank with no invertebrates and either treatment with low salinity, or, in a bare tank, treat with copper safe.

What other animals are in this tank with the wrasse?
Do any of the other fish have spots yet?

None of the other fish have spots yet. Have trochus and turbo snails, and a couple of shrimps.

I don’t have my hospital tank set up yet… what do you suggest?

You said key word- Yet
For a hospital tank, a starter tank kit from Walmart has many of the essentials needed to start up such system. For treatment. treat with Coppersafe or Copper Power at therapeutic level 2.25-2.5 For a FULL 30 days (do not interrupt this 30 day period) monitored by a reliable Copper Test kit such as Hanna Brand- No API brand. Also monitor Ammonia levels while in quarantine with a reliable test kit and add aeration during treatment using an air stone.
The display tank will have to be kept fishless (FALLOW) for 6-8 weeks to assure the existing parasites go through their life cycle without a host fish and die off

Is there a way to get out Firefish that I see once every three weeks? Also, I have a 15 gallon tank set aside with the intentions of using it for back up. Will that be enough FOF a wantanabe angel, red velvet wrasse, two clowns, two Firefish, Midas blenny, and Royal gramma all together??? They’re all juveniles…

My firefish took over 2 months to stay out in the open and was because food hit the tank. They are notorious hiders and jumpers.
15g is quite small- 40b ideal and MINIMAL 20g long

I think that is to small of a tank, if the fish are really tiny and the tank has a good biofilter, maybe - but otherwise I don’t think it would work.
Catching a lone fire fish is tough. Sometimes you have to pull all of the coral and rocks. Som people use fish traps, but fire fish don’t enter them very often .

I guess I’ll just look for a 40 gal tank, maybe I’ll get one that I can utilize for an octopus tank afterwards… would that work?

It would depend on type of octopus. Occasionally Petco has $1/gal sale on tanks. Also check Craigslist and second hand stores.

Would Ich management work in this case with a UV sterilizer?
A UV unit will help but will address what is free floating and passes through the unit and not what is pre-existing

It won’t work all of the time, and you need to apply multiple techniques at the same time: oversized UV, perfect water quality, great diet, strong mechanical filtration, and siphoning off the sand every night. Some people also add low dose peroxide.

So stick with the treatment?

Well, ultimately it’s your decision. If the spots are still just on the wrasse, you stand a good chance with ich management. If the spots spread to other fish, management is less likely to work.
I don’t use ich management myself, because I don’t like the final result where ich can start back up if the fish are stressed later on. Many people take a different view though.

Got it thanks so much! Any details that would work for management other than UV?

Tackling this ASAP is your best approach. You will need to roll up your sleeves a bit if you want the best outcome. It's worth it in the end. Management of ich involves treating ich, it's best to just try to do a correct treatment

Just the other items I mentioned in my post from last night.
