Having a lot of personal experience in the hobby is a prerequisite for owning a business. It's fun to dream about, but you have a lot of research to do. Goodluck!

Have seen so many shops come on strong and go out of biz. With online shopping these days I just don’t see how a shop can survive without major maintenance accounts. Even then your return on investment is tough
Yes I know but in England not many aquarium shops shut down I personally haven’t seen one shut down all I want to know is where you buy aquarium racks with sumps already with it

Hopefully there isn't a decent lfs within 40/50 miles of where you want to open, it's a tiny hobby really and I doubt many survive

First thing I would do before even considering opening a location is checking the supply chain.

What prices can you get? How do they compare with already established? What type of dead loss can be expected? Where is my price point to make profit?

As a business owner I can tell you over the last few years things have gotten infinitely harder to make a profit. Unless you see a glaring need, I would advise against it.

Better consideration might be running online sales from home. The price of real estate, utilities and insurance is crazy these days

My best recommendation is to start slow, and don’t throw your entire bank at it. Set a space for a handful of tanks, and start selling. Build a customer base and then go from there. Those racking systems that were posted is a good idea, but if I had a choice I would build racks out of 8020 aluminum bars. Built a to last and gives more space.

Might want to look into licensing also. Is it hard to get? What requirements? Cost? How long does it take? Where can you import from?
No offense intended but from where I sit it sounds like you’ll need to gain knowledge. Maybe a local hobbyist with retail experience as an employee or partner should be considered as well

England has different supply chain than the United States where most of us are located. Find the supply chain first and you will discover the companies in Europe that build systems. Tropic Marine Centre is a name that comes to mind in Britain. Wish you all the best from America!

Aquavastable is another name but the spelling is off I think. Netherlands I believe.

Would this be okay
Are you making any money now doing what your doing?

What you have there is a low inventory, high margin items services

Running a shop will be high inventory, low margin endeavor

I mean, during the 70s, a similar recessionary time, pet shops in England had to sell dead parrots to stay in business

Are you willing to deal with irate customers after selling them dead parrots to make rent

You'ld be better off being a lumberjack or something. No overhead but the pines

Still means you're being middle manned before you even get started. I would be trying to source from who they are. Every single cent matters when starting a new business.

Also, this creates another stop in the shipping process. One more stress event that would be beneficial to cut out.

TMC is a manufacturer and distributor. Very close to the source.
