Most online retailers have big sales multiple times a year I know Aquasd and Sbb corals are having a sale right now. Lfs can vary some will be very overpriced (I have an lfs that charges 80$ for a Kenya tree frag) some are pretty good depends where you are.

He’s 100% right. Use the sales that the vendors here post to bring in the community. @SBB Corals specifically just had a major sale and was sharing gift cards with people who hadn’t purchased from him before. I got all of these for an excellent price and his customer service has been incredible even for a small buyer like me

I've got an order from them on the way, so far I've had a great time with the customer service and goofing around on their thread.

Hi, new to the saltwater hobby and I was wondering what was the best way to save money on corals. Is it best to buy local or to buy from website when there on discount?

Thanks
find a local seller in your area on marketplace. Get to know them and go look at their corals. I found this is the best way.

Join your local online reef clubs, check kijiji and facebook market and any other classifieds. Check often, good deals are gone very quickly. Meet people and network, work to get in contact with the people that supply the local retailers, then you got it made.

I even just ask sometimes, I’ll post on my online local reef club for example “if anyone has a Walt Disney acro frag to sell super cheap”, there is always someone willing to help out. Hobbyists are very friendly, you’re missing out on a part of the hobby if you don’t network.

Be patient and wait for the holiday sales. I usually stick to one or two websites for coral / fish. I personally have used WWC and Dr reef.
WWC had a Mother’s Day sale, Father’s Day sale, and the live sale in the last 3 months.

Or find some sponsors / vendors here

Make friends with other Reefers in your area. You’ll probably get some coral for free, and you’ll have someone to talk tanks with.

I was just going to say this.
Find people like me who give stuff away from time to time.

I probably just opened up myself for a hundred PM's.
I don't ship, please don't ask.

Buy from a reputable coral vendor on Ebay who have auctions that start at $.99

Who don't get a lot of auction engagement

Check their completed auctions. When you find red items or sold frags for $.99

Joins a local reef club as well as the Facebook reef club in your area. I have gotten hundreds of dollars (retail) of frags for free or steeply discounted coral via my local reef club in my first year in the hobby. I have also given away hundreds of dollars of coral and livestock to others via the reef club. My local reef club also has Gryphon band saws and Apogee par meters available to use for free.

You live in SoCal. That means you have access to more coral sellers and livestock than any other location in the area.

I don’t live in the US, so we don’t have online sellers, nor reef clubs or frag swaps.

That being said, I join others in saying - networking with local reefers is the key.
You’re not only making connections with people alike, but they can sometimes have far more experience than you do and can help when needed.

In addition, while LFS these days are very expensive in my country, most of the coral I got through them were for free, including most of the equipment and maintenance supplies - because from time to time, some of the frags that I make go to them against store credit, and it can pile up sometimes.

These days most if not all of my coral purchases/trading are either with hobbyists or with local coral farms where I’m friends with the owners.

Seriously! I have some easy coral that if you want to make the trip you can have. Some of it you can't kill (I have been trying my hardest) From Kenya trees to easy SPS. I have moved on to slower growing SPS and do not want to keep on trimming coral every weekend.

Sales and other reefers I’ve met here on R2R have been my main sources. Like several of the others I hang out on the pretty much continuous @SBB Corals threads that just jump to a new thread when the old one is done, about once a month (I’ve been on the threads for pretty much 2.5 yrs now) and they always have great corals at ridiculous prices. Also Frag Meets that show up are a good source too.
These were from a couple friends.
