Hi! I’m doing a project for college and $1250 is on the line rn. I know this isn’t a freshwater forum, BUT, it’s the only aquarium forum I’m a part of and I’m sure y’all have owned freshwater tanks too.

SO, with all of the equipment and plants, not including fish, how much have y’all spent on 5-10 gal freshwater setups?

It depends on what I want to keep in it. I've spent as little as 50 bucks up to many hundreds or more.

What is the goal of the project? Depending of the needs including filtration, lighting, and much more the price can swing widely. I have a lot of tanks (both freshwater and saltwater), but without more info I would just be guessing.

If you go low tech (no CO2), I think you could pull it off for less than $100 going with simple used equipment. You can get by with inexpensive LEDs and HOB filters. Canister filters and CO2 injection systems are going to drive it to several hundred dollars, but I doubt you would do that on a 5-10 gallon.

You can go very low tech with basic led lights of easily under $100.

$5/5 gallon petco tank
$10 gravel
$5 sponge filter
$20 LED light
$10 misc
Very basic, nothing special 5 gallon tank for 50 bucks.

I have over $3000invested in my nano... But I have it set up on an Apex with auto dosing and water changes.

Don't get me started on the corals I bought for it.

Good thing, it's almost all scaleable to a larger tank if I choose to make the leap in the next few years.

Hi again! To clarify for those with questions, the tank would be WITH live plants, heater, filter, substrate, hides, thermometer, and equipment for water changes and water conditioning. The set up would be for betta splendens.
The contest is to design a product for a targeted market, my product is a humane betta kit for newbies w/o any experience.
Thank you all SO much for all of the responses!
