I get glazed over looks from most people, though collegues that know will ask how the tank is doing, and do I have any cool new fish. I've been asked to put a live cam on "Achmed" my dusky jaw fish.
One of my BFFs said to me at lunch, "Put away your phone and baby pictures or I'm going to call your husband."

I guess I'm lucky: There is one co-worker in my room and I told her about the rats, that I used to have. Dragged her into having rats.
I also told her that I used to have a snake. She first got into spiders but sold them again and now has 2 snakes.
I told her about reefing, she now is a reefer. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Before every one of these decisions, she was actually complaining about all that money she had to spend on that but eventuall commited to it, without me really trying to persuade her. I was just talking about what I like.

Now we talk about corals at least an hour daily and from time to time one of us shows the other one some corals at the store and every time it quickly escalates into both of us making a combined order and spending money :expressionless-face: .

I'm working at an online store for (fresh water) aquaristics, though. But actually none of them is into reefing. That one guy...but he is about to end it. And I see him like twice a year. The others are mildy interested but not really. But that one co-worker is enough to keep me happy through listening to my rambling.

At first glance of the pictures i show them they are ussualy blown away.
The next comments are:
- are thoose real and alive?
- i can never do that
- very difficult
- very expensive
- very time consuming
- you can never leaf home
- it's a moneypit

When you share to much with non-reefers they appeared bored, so know when to stop your reeftales. That's why you need kindred spirits to share your hobby with.

Coworkers don’t ask… non reef friends call me a dork when I express that I want to go to a frag swap or laugh at me everytime I reference my “fish forum”.
Aww, I hope they at least laugh at you in a way that is funny for you too, else that would not be cool.

I talk about all my tanks both fresh and salt. I get asked what kind of fish for the most part. When I first showed pics of the reef, it was “what pretty flowers” (kinda funny since I’ve got quite a few Gonis). Raised eyebrow response to the they're animals at first.
